Any time a person asks me what laptop they should buy, one of the first things I ask them is, “What size are you looking for?” This question throws them off guard because top on most people’s list is pricing and the brand.

If the screen is too small, viewing is uncomfortable and if it’s too large you’ll have portability issues. I have found the perfect middle ground in 14-inch laptops. They have a sizable screen, are portable, and have good battery life. I scoured the market for the best 14 inch laptop and came up with these fantastic options.

Performance

Portability

The laptop weighs 3.53lb and measures just over 0.78 inches thick. Since the processor isn’t power-hungry, it doesn’t require a large cooling system which is why Acer could make the chassis light. The TravelMate X3 slips easily into a backpack for commuting.

The graphite gray-colored laptop is encased in an aluminum body and sports a basic look which makes it suitable for business environments and schools. The side bezels are slim and there’s a 750p camera on the top bezel to facilitate zoom or Skype.

The 14-inch screen has a 1920 x 1080 resolution that delivers good picture quality in terms of color and clarity. The texts are sharp too which makes this machine good for research, reading, and working on reports/essays. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 will not offer mind-blowing potential but it’s good for basic games.

Other Considerations

I love that the sellers bundle this laptop with an iPuzzle DVD Extension for playing DVDs and CDs. This way you can enjoy watching your favorite movies or listen to music when you don’t want to stream online.

The keyboard is spacious with decent key travel. There is no dedicated Numpad, but you’ll find that the keys on the right-hand side double as numerals. The touchpad is wide, responds well to, and has a satisfactory click.

To connect to peripherals, you get two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, one USB Type-C, one DisplayPort, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Internal connections include Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2 technology.

Once in a while, a laptop manufacturer surprises us with their innovation, as is the case with the Asus ZenBook Duo. It comes with brilliant features including a secondary display ScreenPad and a Pantone Validated touchscreen, that designers, 3D animators, professional video editors, and photographers will find highly appealing

Performance

The upper-mid-range 10th generation i7-10510U processor powers this machine supporting faster system memory and higher clock speeds. To that end, it works with high 16GB of RAM for effortless handling of day to day tasks including heavy-duty work like professional-level photo editing or audio and video production.

With 1TB SSD storage, you get super fast speed while duplicating multimedia files, fast data retrieval for quick launches, and tons of space for your files.

Portability

This beautiful dual-screen laptop checks in at 3.53lb and is 0.78 inches thick. It passes portability checks allowing you to take with you on flights or the road or carry it in your hands as you move from one room to another, in your house or office.

In testing the laptop’s battery life, we found that using both displays yields nine and a half hours while browsing or using office applications. The time increased to 12 hours if you’re only using the main display. I can confidently say that the battery life on this machine is solid.

Display

I don’t know where to start, because ZenBook Duo is absolute eye-candy. The Celestial Blue laptop features Asus’ iconic concentric circles that gleam like jewels when light hits them—it’s stylish without feeling tacky. There are two screens here, and we’ll look at the second screen a little later.

The NanoEdge primary screen widens your viewing space so you get more out of the 14-inch screen. With a 1920 x 1080 resolution that’s Pantone Validated, the colors are ultra-vivid, rich, and the details crisp, perfect for precision work. The NVIDIA GeForce MX250 discrete graphics render games beautiful allowing you to play modern games when you’re on a break

Other Considerations

The ScreenPad Plus (second screen) 12.6-inch display that takes up half of the ZenBook Duo’s deck. It’s meant to increase productivity by running secondary apps that can’t fit on the main screen. There are many ways to use the ScreenPad Plus including taking notes, drawing, or extending the primary screen for an extensive view.

The laptop comes with an ErgoLift hinge that makes typing more comfortable especially when it’s placed on a flat surface. The keys are bouncy and clicky but may feel a little cramped. The same applies to the trackpad and its positioning will take some getting used to as it’s found on the right-hand side.

Connection-wise you get two USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports, one USB Type-port, an HDMI port, DC-in, microSD card reader, and audio jack. Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) make for speedy wireless connections.

Bottom Line

The ZenBook Duo is a machine that you’ll enjoy flaunting thanks to its gorgeous celestial blue color and unique design. With strong performance, good battery life, and dual displays,  it’s a useful tool in the hands of designers, 3D animators, video editors,  professional photographers, and other creatives.

Just like the ZenBook Duo, this ExpertBook B9450 laptop relies on the 10th generation Core i7-10510U chip for processing power. This upper mid-range processor supports higher RAM and pairs with 16GB of RAM to support seamlessly multitasking. You can open multiple Chrome tabs, run apps like slack, and work on office applications with ease.

The 2TB SSD storage is perfect for storing work files, multimedia files, and any other files that you want to store. In case you need to transfer files really fast, the SSD will come in handy.

Portability

The ExpertBook weighs 2.2lb so it’s lightweight and the main reason why I recommend it for frequent travelers. Whether you’re taking a train ride, flying, or riding in the car, the laptop hardly adds any weight to your luggage and is comfortable to hold in your hands or set up on your lap.

The laptop has an impressive battery life that falls shy of 17 hours. Imagine that. It will last you through an entire day and beyond. If you’re having trouble adjusting to a different timezone, simply flip it open and enjoy a movie.

Display

This midnight blue laptop sports a magnesium alloy casing and is military grade tested to withstand extreme conditions. These durability tests include vibrations, shock, and drops as well as port durability testing. In other words, the machine can stand up to the rigors of life on the move.

The 14-inch screen has a 1920 x 1080 resolution that provides detailed, colorful, and sharp images and texts. The screen is bright enough to use outdoors but a very bright sun may bring about some reflections. With the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620, you can play casual games and modern games on lower settings.

Other Considerations

The laptop has a 180° hinge that allows you to lay the laptop flat for more comfortable viewing and makes screen sharing that much easier. Plus, the ErgoHinge feature tilts the keyboard downward to make your typing experience more comfortable.

The backlit keyboard is spill-resistant, which is a relief for those of us who love sipping drinks while working. The keys offer good key travel, are clicky, and have a good landing. The smooth and responsive touchpad doubles as an LED-illuminated Numpad that is activated by tapping the upper right corner of the touchpad.

External connections on this machine include one USB Type-A port, one USB Type-C with Thunderbolt, an HDMI port for wired connections through Ethernet, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Gig+ Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 technology make up the Internal wireless connections.

Bottom Line

The ExpertBook B9450 is an attractive laptop that’s lightweight, has a great battery life, and more importantly boasts high durability. Combine that with a speedy processor and plenty of storage space and you have an excellent machine for a life on the road.

Epic battery life is the stuff of dreams because no one wants a laptop that shuts down in the middle of an important job or a movie-watching session for that matter. The 14-inch LG Gram laptop boasts over 22 hours unplugged, nope, you didn’t read that wrong, I said 22 hours. And with all this time in your hands, who’s to tell what you can achieve?

Performance

The LG Gram runs on the upper-mid-range 10th Generation i5-10210U processor commonly found on many mainstream laptops. It pairs with 8GB of RAM to facilitate a smooth user experience giving you fast access to programs and apps. It’s a viable solution for heavy-duty tasks like photo or video editing, but keep in mind that’s not a workstation machine.

The laptop comes with 512GB SSD storage which is a decent amount of space for your work files, multimedia files, and even photos. It also supports the processor’s work by retrieving data speedily.

Portability

The Asus ExpertBook is not the only super lightweight machine here as this LG Gram weighs a paltry 2.5lb. Hold it in your hands, walk around the house or office, or simply slip it in a bag and get going, this laptop is highly portable.

And to seal the deal you get over 22 hours of battery life unplugged. This is one of those laptops that just keeps going, even after you’ve dropped. For busy executives who dash from planes to meetings to planes again and other meetings, this battery life can be a lifesaver.

Display

LG Gram has a minimalistic design that can appeal to anyone who prefers a machine that blends into their surroundings. The dark-colored magnesium alloy casing makes this lightweight machine sturdy.

With a 14-inch IPS display that has a 1920 x 1080 resolution, you can enjoy wider views and vivid images that are colorful and sharp. If you work on presentations, you and your audience will appreciate the life-like quality and non-blurry texts. On the gaming end, the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 is good for light games and a few heavier ones on minimal settings.

Other Considerations

The keyboard looks spacious and feels as much, except for the arrow keys, but it’s not a dealbreaker. The keys feel soft and clicky allowing you to type at your normal speed. The trackpad is also spacious but you may notice a tendency to drag when you use it.

To connect to peripherals there are two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 (micro-USB), one micro-USB port with RJ45 gender, an HDMI port, a micro-SD card slot, a headphone-out, and a DC-in. Internally, you can connect wirelessly via LAN, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

Bottom Line

The LG Gram is a good option for anyone who is looking for extra-long battery life on a laptop. It’s highly portable thanks to its lightweight design and allows you to connect to wired connections to make information sharing in meetings that much easier.

Are you looking for a laptop that’s optimized for online learning? The HP EliteBook 840 is equipped with programs such as Google Classroom, Zoom, and WLAN to ensure you can connect, study, submit assignments, or teach your students without any issues. It’s an ideal machine for teachers and students alike.

Performance

EliteBook 840 G5 is powered by the 8th Generation Core i5-8250U processor. This processor provides speed without consuming too much power or requiring a large cooling mechanism. It works with 32GB of RAM to crunch through daily computing tasks with buttery smoothness.

The 2TB SSD storage is awesome. It supports fast multimedia file transfers, including the heavy ones, and retrieves data quickly for use by the processor. Above all, you get tons and tons of space to save school work, ebooks, videos, music, and movies too.

Portability

Online learning means your laptop is most likely stationed at one place, but if you need to move to another part of the house, or take it out of the house, you’ll find that the EliteBook 840 G5 is not heavy at all. It weighs 3.27lb and measures 0.78 inches thick and with such a small footprint, it will fit in compact spaces.

The battery life stands at eight and a half hours which is pretty solid. It will carry you through Zoom sessions, video chats with pupils/classmates/friends, researching and completing assignments or marking sessions.

Display

EliteBook 8400 G5 feels like a work of luxury thanks to its aluminum exterior that sports a silvery finish. The design is simple but elegant. It may be targeting online use, but it doesn’t have to be boring.

The 14-inch IPS display with 1920 x 1080 delivers colorful, detailed, and wide viewing angles. Unfortunately, the screen isn’t very bright, so using it outdoors may present a bit of an issue. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 is good for casual gaming but considering the processor is quite powerful, you can play some modern games.

Other Considerations

When you purchase this laptop you also receive a BROAGE flash drive. It sports a 3-in-1 design and can be used as a Ballpoint pen, a stylus, or as a 64GB USB flash drive. It’s worth pointing out that the Elitebook 840 G5 screen doesn’t support stylus use, so the stylus is for use on other devices.

The keyboard is backlit which can be very useful when you’re working in a dimly lit area. The keys are well-spaced and have a short key travel. They feel firm and clicky as you type resulting in an overall good experience. The touchpad has a pair of clickers and it feels smooth and responsive to commands.

Connectivity options include two USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, one Ethernet port, one docking connector, and a headphone/mic jack. Wireless connections are in the form of Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2 technology

Convertible laptops are both fun and useful giving you different ways to work or enjoy watching movies. The 2020 Lenovo Yoga C940 offers 4 different positions to get your productivity or entertainment going on. Further, this convertible laptop has a 4K resolution that translates into ultra high-quality images.

Performance

Under the hood, you’ll find a 10th Generation Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor. It’s high-end and one of the fastest chips on the market. Alongside 16GB of RAM, it breezes through daily tasks like office document editing, web browsing, and multimedia. It also has the power to handle audio and video production and professional photography.

The laptop comes with 1TB SSD storage space for storing all your files, music albums, or photos. The SSD facilitates speedy transfers—think seconds literally. S you won’t have trouble duplicating multimedia files.

Portability

The Yoga C940 weighs 2.98lb and measures 0.6-inches thick (maybe I should say thin). It falls on the lightweight end of the spectrum. You can walk around, set it up on your lap without straining. Better yet, throw it into your backpack along with your other stuff for commuting.

The battery lasts seven and a half hours unplugged. It is close to a full day’s work so you will stay productive for long, or binge-watch movies back to back. But as a precaution, plack the charger.

Display

The Yoga C940 laptop sports a mica tone which is a welcome alternative to the usual grays and blacks and looks pretty stylish on a desk. Its aluminum chassis gives the slim machine a premium feel despite its light weight.

The 14-inch screen supports stylus input and houses a 3840 x 2160 resolution or what we call 4K resolution. The image quality is off the charts— super colorful, vivid, and so sharp that you can pick all the fine details with accuracy. It’s perfect for streaming movies, editing photos, or some CAD work.

This laptop comes with integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics. Iris Plus graphics is definitely faster than intel UHD graphics, but it’s still a basic graphics processor aimed at casual games, and on lower settings, it can render some demanding games.

Other Considerations

Unlike most laptops that feature separate drivers that connect the display to the base, the Yoga C940 has a continuous hinge that doubles as a soundbar. And it blares better sound than your average laptop. The machine also boasts a 360-degree flip-and-fold design that allows you to use it in laptop, stand, tablet, or tent mode.

The keys on the deck are generously spaced to accommodate both large and small hands while the keys feel cushy and comfortable to work on. The RGB-lit keyboard is comfortable to use and ideal for long typing sessions. The trackpad is large, tracks gestures effectively but lacks clickers so may have to click severally to find a spot that works.

There aren’t many connectivity options on this machine but you get what you need to connect to peripherals. It has two Thunderbolt ports (for charging and connecting the DisplayPort), one USB Type-A port, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Wireless connections include Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11AX

Bottom Line

The Yoga C940 is a beautiful machine with a stunning 4K display and a premium chassis aimed at content creators, designers, and savvy business users. You can use the stylus for jotting down ideas, annotating documents, or creating. Lastly, its convertible design increases its versatility giving you different ways to use the machine.

Straight up, the ThinkPad T490 is a no-nonsense laptop designed for the business world,  equipped with relevant specs necessary to support these entities. With plenty of memory and storage, portability, durability, and ability to connect to wired networks, this machine allows you to run your operations anywhere.

Performance

ThinkPad T490 runs on the high-end 8th Generation Core i7-8565U processor found on mainstream laptops. It carries enough muscle to tackle heavy-duty tasks such as high-resolution photo and video editing, making it ideal for professional content creators.

The processor works hand in hand with 40GB of RAM and 2TB SSD storage which makes the entire system highly efficient, fast and responsive. Bulky multimedia files will be accommodated easily within the 2TB storage, while file transfers are a breeze.

Portability

The machine weighs 4lb making it the heaviest 14-inch laptop on our list. That said, it’s a portable laptop and one that can be carried in a laptop bag when you’re going for a meeting or traveling.

ThinkPad T490 offers over 10 hours of battery life between recharges. This is a decent amount of time if you’re away from the office, or in a place where there is no power outlet. Well, unless you’re in those power meetings that go on for more than 10 straight hours.

Display

The matte black laptop is built using fiberglass reinforced plastic that is further reinforced by a magnesium frame. As such it feels stiff and sturdy and won’t flex easily. The laptop’s exterior is covered in a rubberized layer that extends to the palm rests area. It comes off as very business-like and blends well into business environments.

The 14-inch display has a 1920 x 1080 resolution delivering colorful images that are not overly saturated and decent clarity. If you’re in the real estate business and need to showcase properties to your client, this screen will portray them nicely.

For graphics, you get the integrated Intel UHD 620 Graphics. This basic graphics processor may not render modern games well, but it is backed by a high-end processor, so you should be able to play some demanding titles without compromising the settings.

Other Considerations

The laptop is bundled with a portable Data Hub with a data sync rate of up to 5Gbps. It is compatible with Windows, Chrome OS, Linux, and mac OS.

The spacious keyboard is a delight to use and is so thought out that you get dedicated Home and End keys. The curved keys line up with the natural curve of our fingers, feel soft, and offer ample travel for a comfortable typing experience. The trackpad makes subdued clicking sounds when pressed and quite responsive.

To keep you connected, there are two USB 3.1 ports, one Thunderbolt3 (Type-C), an HDMI port, an SD Card Reader, an Ethernet jack, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Internal connections are in the form of Ethernet LAN, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, and Bluetooth 5.0.

Bottom Line

The ThinkPad T490 is a powerful machine with business-like aesthetics, a solid build, and battery life that can carry you through the day. The fingerprint scanner helps keeps your information secure and you can enjoy a clear display as you work.

From manufacturing materials to energy-efficiency, the HP ProBook 440 laptop requires minimal sustainability throughout its shelf life, lessening its impact on our environment. It’s the kind of machine, we should all aim to own.

Performance

The ProBook 440 G6 uses the same processor as the ThinkPad T490—the high-end Core i7-8565U processor, so I can safely say that this chip is a great option for business users. The chip powerful enough to handle daily computing tasks as well as CPU-intensive work such as video editing, etc.

The processor works with 8GB of RAM to process all tasks with buttery smoothness. Do you want to open 15 Chrome Tabs, work on Slack, and listen to music, no problem. To store your files, photos, music, or videos, you get 256GB SSD SSD storage space.

Portability

This machine weighs 3.53lb and is 0.71 inches thick. This translates to a slim laptop that you can take with you anywhere. Slip it into a laptop and hit the road. You can also comfortably set it up on your lap for on the go use

ProBook 440 G6 offers up to 13 hours of use, unplugged, endorsing its ability to support productivity or entertainment without being stuck to a chair near a power outlet. Should you carry the charger? Well, you most likely won’t need it, but as a precaution please do.

Display

ProBook 440 G6 looks very modern mostly because of the eye-catching silver finish that covers the aluminum body. It feels stable but may be susceptible to warping slightly if you apply too much pressure.

The unit has a  Full HD IPS display (1920 x 1080) so you get excellent viewing angles and highly detailed images that are colorful and clear. You can use the laptop outdoors but I recommend steering clear of direct sunlight to minimize reflections. The laptop comes with integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 which renders casual games well.

Other Considerations

The chiclet keyboard is well-spaced and large enough keys to minimize typos. The key travel feels rather shallow and the keyboard is not backlit which can make it difficult to use in dim environments. The touchpad is spacious, has a smooth surface, and responds to commands.

While the ProBook 440 G6 lacks a thunderbolt3 port, it has plenty of other ports to keep you connected. You get one USB Type-C connector, two USB Type-A, one USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, an SD Card Reader, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Wireless connections include Wi-Fi 802.11ac, WLAN, and Bluetooth 5.

Bottom Line

This EPEAT-Certified laptop portrays commitment from HP to manufacturer laptops with a minimal carbon footprint. The HP ProBook 440 G6 is a stylish power-efficient machine built using good quality materials and one of the best 14-inch laptop in today’s market. It’s ideal for everyday office or home use.

You can watch the screen from different angles without distortion.
