I once bought what looked like a nice laptop to realize later how terrible the viewing was. From washed-out colors to poor viewing angles, streaming movies was so painful, I had to throw the machine out.

So, any time I’m shopping for a new laptop, I ask myself, “How good is this laptop for watching movies?” Because hey, reclining your seat and enjoying a movie or two is one of life’s little pleasures.

If you want a laptop that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the world of movies, check out these best laptops for watching movies we’ve rounded.

Pros
  • Brilliant display
  • Non-reflective screen
  • Lightweight
  • Solid construction
  • Great speakers
Cons
  • No SD reader

The Lenovo Yoga C940 was an obvious first choice for my team and me because we’ve binge-watched movies. From an awesome 4K display to decent speakers, portability, powerful processor, and plenty of storage, it checks all boxes. Plus, it’s convertible, giving you more than one way to position the laptop for comfortable use.

Performance

This machine is powered by the high-end 10th generation Core i7-1065G7 processor popular for its power-efficiency and low heat production. It keeps the laptop from overheating as you stream movies or tackle other CPU-intensive tasks. It’s a fast chip that supports faster system memory.

The processor is paired with 16GB of RAM for super-quick data retrieval. From web browsing to streaming movies, and using office applications, you can weave through multiple Chrome Tabs and apps without glitches. The laptop offers 4TB SSD storage space for hoarding all your favorite movies and files.

Portability

The Yoga C940 is an ultra-slim laptop measuring 0.62 inches thick and weighing 2.98lb. You can have it on your lap while watching an entire movie without feeling any strain. You can painlessly carry it in your hands from room to room or and commute as necessary.

The battery on this laptop lasted seven and a half hours as we streamed movies. So I can say that the battery life is fairly decent. If you need to take the machine with you, and use it for other tasks, pack the charger too.

Display

The mica-colored laptop is built using premium aluminum that looks and feels expensive (rightly so). I love the rounded edges, slim bezels, and the innovative continuous hinge that doubles as a soundbar.

Within the 14-inch touchscreen display is where the magic is at. It houses a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) screen that delivers image quality that’s nothing short of awesome. The colors are richer and images so crisp, we could pick out minute details that didn’t even appear on a 1080p panel. Integrated Intel Iris Plus graphics support gaming if you wish to indulge in a game or two.

Other Considerations

The YogaC940 sports a convertible design, allowing you to use it in laptop or tent mode for better viewing. As far as sound goes, you have two speakers and the soundbar hinge that blast clear audio with deep bass, perfect for listening to movies out loud.

Internal connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6 AX201 Wifi and Bluetooth 5.0. To keep you connected to external peripherals you get two USB-C Thunderbolt3 ports, one USB Type-A, and a microphone/headphone combo jack.

Bottom Line

The Yoga C940 is a premium laptop with sturdy construction that can withstand everyday use. With a 4K display that is sharp and colorful, you’ll enjoy every single detail the directors put in there for you. It’s perfect for the discerning movie watchers, business users, students, and content creators.

2. Microsoft Surface Book 3

“Best Option for Business Executives”

Pros
  • Gorgeous display
  • Detachable for increased versatility
  • Robust build
  • Stylus support
Cons
  • Not bright enough for use in direct sunlight
  • Low sound

Between writing reports, meeting clients, and traveling, many busy executives hardly have the time to slump into their couch and watch a movie. Surface Book 3 presents an excellent solution giving you plenty of power and a good battery life that lets you catch up on a movie or two on the go.

Performance

Just like the Lenovo Yoga C940, Surface Book 3 comes with a 10th generation Core i7-1065G7 processor that works with 16GB of RAM for seamless multitasking abilities. You can open 20 Chrome Tabs and stream a movie on YouTube without breaking a sweat. Plus, the chip has great thermal characteristics that keep it from getting too hot while you’re watching a movie.

256GB SSD storage is available here, meeting the minimum requirement for a movie-watching laptop. You should be able to store twenty to thirty movies and still have space for your work files.

Portability

This machine weighs 4.20lb which feels somewhat heavy compared to the Yoga C940 and several other laptops listed here but remains portable. Better yet, it’s detachable making it even lighter and easier to hold in your hands or walk around with. You can slip the laptop into a backpack for commuting.

We had just over seven hours of use unplugged which is decent. You get a much shorter time watching movies on the tablet. We only managed three hours from it. Depending on the movies you’re watching that could translate to at least 2 films between recharges.

Display

Surface Book 3 is built using magnesium alloy and finished in silver giving it a beautiful industrial look. It’s one of those super sturdy machines that support heavy use and still manage to turn heads.

The 15-inch PixelSense display is a favorite among many. With 3240 x 2160 screen resolution, the image quality is off the charts. Clarity, rich colors, and good contrast make this screen one of the best laptops for streaming movies online, in your free time. The dedicated GeForce GTX 1660 GPU renders well and is good for playing modern titles on medium settings.

Other Considerations

We mentioned earlier that this laptop is detachable, but unlike other hybrids that connect magnetically, Surface Book 3 uses a fulcrum hinge. This fulcrum hinge curls in the same way the one on a book does. To detach the tablet from the base, you’ll need to long-press the dedicated button on the keyboard.

The front-facing stereo speakers are good but not very powerful. You can watch some Netflix, I would recommend using a Bluetooth speaker or headphones for better sound. The laptop comes with Wi-Fi 6: 802.11ax and Bluetooth Wireless 5.0 for internal connections.

On the outside, there is one USB Type-C USB port, two USB Type-A ports, two Surface Connect ports (one on the tablet and the other on the keyboard), an audio jack, and a full-sized card reader.

Bottom Line

I believe the Surface Book 3 is a great option for busy executives who want a device that is powerful enough for work and still supports media consumption. With a gorgeous display, multiple positions, and good battery life, you can still indulge in this pastime wherever you are.

  • Backlit Magic Keyboard and Touch ID
  • Tenth-generation Intel Core i5 processor

Pros
  • Looks attractive
  • Superb display
  • Great sound
  • Super slim profile
  • Fingerprint reader for security
Cons
  • Limited connectivity options

If you want a laptop that produces excellent sound then you should check out this Apple MacBook Air. It’s equipped with stereo speakers that have a wider stereo sound, deeper bass, clarity, and decent volume to make your movie-watching experience all the more satisfying. Plus, it’s a Mac, so you know you’re getting excellent quality all around.

Performance

Powering this baby is a 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor that’s exceedingly capable, allowing you to open multiple tabs while streaming movies. I had slack, Chrome Tabs, and YouTube open and didn’t notice any slowdown, although the fans kick in when you’re running intensive apps.

Paired with 8GB of RAM, MacBook Air is responsive in day-to-day computing tasks and entertainment, which makes it ideal for home and office use as well as college life. It comes with 512GB SSD storage that’s plenty much for movies, videos, music, and other files.

Portability

At 2.8lb and measuring 0.63 inches thick, this laptop is as slim and portable as they come. You can comfortably carry this machine in your hands or slip it in a bag and head over to work, university, or the coffee shop. Or you can set it on your lap and binge-watch Netflix.

Unplugged, the MacBook Air gives you just over seven hours of use. That’s a fairly decent battery life that can come in handy during long flights or train commutes. Or just binge-watching movies on a lazy Sunday morning.

Display

This machine is lightweight but it has a sturdy aluminum casing that is finished in a space-gray color. It’s also available in silver and rose gold colors. All of these options look very chic and modern.

The main reason why this MacBook Air made the best laptops for watching movies list is its 13.3-inch Retina display with True Tone technology. True Tone technology adjusts the color temperature on your display automatically to make it more comfortable for viewing. In other words, your eyes won’t be tearing or straining because you were staring at the screen for too long.

Someone ought to make that the standard right? On top of that, the IPS screen boasts a 2560 x 1600 resolution that delivers rich color and contrasts and superb sharpness that makes the movie-watching experience a delight. Lastly, you have integrated Intel Iris Plus graphics that delivers decent graphics for gaming.

Other Considerations

MacBook has two tweeters that flank the keyboard while the vents at the bottom of the laptop are responsible for the bass. You get wide stereo sound and deeper bass that sounds so much better than that on other laptops. The audio quality is good with amazing clarity even when you’re watching heavy action films.

The laptop supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi for online connections and Bluetooth 5.0 technology for Bluetooth-supported peripherals. External connections are limited as you only get two Thunderbolt3 ports and a headphone jack. Even so, ports are good for connecting to DisplayPorts and charging.

Bottom Line

I think the MacBook Air is ideal for movie buffs and Netflix movie reviewers thanks to its picture quality and Retina display that protects your eyes from strain even as you watch movie, after movie.

Pros

  • Plenty of connectivity options
  • Strong Wi-Fi connection
Cons
  • Short battery life
  • Heavy

I must admit that I always wanted to watch Jurassic Park Films on this baby because I had the feeling the laptop would transform into one of those scary flesh-eating dinos. Seriously, though, even ardent gamers deserve a break from all the action, to sit back and enjoy a movie or two. And what better way to do so than on the powerful Acer Predator Triton gaming laptop.

Performance

Under the hood, you’ll find the high-end 10th gen Core i7-10875H processor found in high-performance laptops that target gamers. The chip runs hot and consumes a lot of power, which is the price we pay for the high performance it provides in gaming or video conversions.

Coupled with 32GB of RAM and 512 SSD storage, Triton 500 offers lightning-fast file retrieval, excellent multi-tasking abilities, and no hiccups as you stream online movies. Plus, you have tons of storage to store your favorite movies, and those you want to watch later.

Portability

Triton 500 tips the scales at 4.85lb so it’s fairly heavy compared to other laptops we’ve reviewed here. It is still a portable machine that will fit into your backpack, but your back will feel the weight of it.

Typical of gaming laptops, battery life is quite poor. We managed to stream movies for three hours before the battery gave out. It’s better than other gaming laptops that only last one hour. So, if you intend to go out with this machine, you’ll want to take the power adapter with you.

Display

Triton 500 has a bit of flair thanks to its aluminum casing, angular edges, turquoise-colored vents and ports as well as the RGB backlit keyboard. It’s sleek and predatory look enhances its appeal as you stream movies, particularly the thriller genre.

The 15-inch has a 1920 x 1080 resolution that offers rich colors and amazing clarity. You get an IPS panel for wider viewing allowing you and your neighbor to watch movies without distortion. The discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Graphics helps with the visual quality, but you’ll appreciate it more when you’re tackling the AAA games.

Other Considerations

The front-facing speakers are placed on the bottom lip. They look kind of small but can get really loud. The DTS X Ultra provides a 360-degree surround system that delivers a real-world spatial sound for the ultimate movie streaming experience.

Triton 500 comes with Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650i for a fast online experience and Bluetooth technology. Externally, you have one Thunderbolt3 port, three USB-C ports, an HDMI port, one Mini DisplayPort, and a headphone jack.

Bottom Line

The Triton 500 is an excellent gaming laptop that’s great for streaming movies. It’s equipped with a strong LAN for a fast online connection to keep your movies from buffering. And thanks to the IPS display you can view your movie from different angles with clarity and precision. I recommended this laptop to anyone who has a passion for both movies and gaming.

Workstation laptops are just that, machines designed to handle intensive workloads and withstand continuous use without breaking down. But they also have the specs for watching movies when you’re on a break. In this case, the CUK WF75 by MSI is a top contender for the job.

Performance

The CUK WF75 is powered by the 10th Generation Intel Core i7-10750H processor, a powerful high-end chip used in high-performance laptops for engineers, architects, content creators, and other professionals. It provides superior performance in tasks that require prolonged high processor loads, which means downloading movies will be a breeze.

The laptop comes with 64GB of RAM for easy access to data, allowing you can switch through different apps and tabs swiftly. With 2TB of SSD storage, you have more than enough space for downloading movies and storing your work files.

Portability

The CUK WF75 laptop weighs 4.85lb, so it’s as heavy as the Triton 500 gaming laptop. Still, you can carry it in a bag or hold it on your lap to watch movies. You will feel the weight of it but it’s manageable.

Battery life is pegged at 6 hours for work-related use. I have found that you can get more life out of this machine when you’re watching movies. So if you’re at the airport, or your desk enjoying a well-earned break, you can enjoy up to six movies back to back.

Display

The CUK WF75 has no flashy designs and its neutral silver color makes it ideal for professional environments. The brush metal patterns on the bottom give it an edge so it’s not that boring, after all. It comes across as durable and almost rugged to suit fieldwork.

With an anti-glare IPS panel, you won’t have reflections or limited viewing angles messing with your streaming experience when you’re out in bright sunlight. The screen has a 1920 x 1080 resolution for accurate colors and crisp images. Further, the NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 discrete graphics make your images more visually appealing but will be more useful for CAD work or gaming.

Other Considerations

The CUK WF75 is equipped with speakers certified by Hi-Res Audio. At full volume, they are so loud, they can fill a room, and the sound quality is pretty good.

This machine supports LAN for wired connections and Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax so it’s future-proofed and just what you need to keep up with network speeds of the future. There are ports aplenty here, you get a USB Type-C port, one USB Type-A port, an HDMI port, an RJ45 port, a mic-in, and headphone out.

Bottom Line

The CUK WF75 is a great laptop for professionals and fieldwork. And when it’s time to let your hair down, close all the tabs and stream a movie or two. The machine supports wired and Wi-Fi connections for a smooth experience and a fine display for streaming.

6. Dell Latitude 3510

“Plenty of Space for Storing Movies”

Pros
  • Tons of storage space
  • Plenty of connectivity options
  • Speedy internet connection
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Runs warm

If you’re like me you probably have tons of “absolute favorite movies” that you don’t want to delete even after watching them hundreds of times. Luckily, the Dell Latitude 3510 offers up to 2TB storage allowing you to retain your old movies and still have plenty left over for new favorites that are still in the making.

Performance

Powering the Dell 3510 is the upper-mid-range 10th generation Core i7-10510U processor typically used in mainstream notebooks because of its power efficiency. Working with 64GB of RAM this laptop is an effective desktop replacement that can seamlessly handle daily tasks from office applications, browsing, and watching movies.

The laptop comes with a whopping 2TB SSD storage, it is fronted as a desktop replacement you know. You’ll have more than enough space for your movie collection and other files too.

Portability

The Latitude 3510 weighs 5lb so yes, you’ll have a heavy little machine in your hands. Nevertheless, the laptop is portable and if your hands and back are up to the task, place the machine in a backpack, and get going.

To make up for the weight, the laptop has a good battery life, clocking just over 9 hours unplugged. If you’re taking the day (o night) off for binge-watching movies, you’ll have a serious back to back session.

Display

Like several other Dell laptops, the black-colored Latitude 3510 is made of plastic and sports a simple design. The matte finish is lightly textured meaning fingerprint marks won’t be an issue.

The 15.6-inch screen is home to an IPS panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution so you can expect wide viewing angles, accurate colors, and sharp images. With the integrated Intel UHD Graphics, you can engage in some games when you’re not catching up on the latest movies on Netflix.

Other Considerations

The stereo speakers are placed underneath the laptop and produce well-balanced sound. If you don’t want to use headphones, you can listen out loud as the sound can get loud and clear too. Bass is detectable, but it could use some beefing up.

For online connectivity, you get Wi-Fi 6 AX201 (that provides a better and faster connection in a congested area), Ethernet LAN  for wired connections, and Bluetooth 5.1 technology.

To connect to peripherals, you have two USB 3.2 Gen1 ports, one USB 2.0 port, one USB Type-C port, an HDMI port, DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet port, microSD reader, headphone/mic combo jack, and one speaker output.

Bottom Line

If you’re in the market for a desktop replacement, then I think the Latitude 3510 is fit for the job. With plenty of memory and storage, good battery life, portability, and a fast internet connection, you won’t miss your desktop computer at all, not even for watching movies.

Some laptops give you a few minutes warning while others simply shut down when they run out of juice. Both scenarios are terrible when you’re in the middle of an interesting movie and if you don’t have the charger handy, oh well. The HP 15-dy1036nr provides over eight hours of battery life which is ample time for binge-watching movies

Performance

The HP 15-dy1036nr runs on the upper-mid-range 10th generation Core i5-1035G1 processor that’s power-efficient, supports faster RAM, and runs cooler. It pairs with 8GB of RAM to effortlessly tackle day-to-day demands like movie streaming, document editing, and web browsing.

The 256GB SSD storage space ensures fast boot-ups, quick downloads, and speedier file transfers. Plus, you have lots of space for storing your favorite movies, and the ones you’ve newly downloaded for watching later.

Portability

The laptop weighs in at 3.75lb, leaning on the lightweight end of the spectrum. With its travel-friendly dimensions, you can toss it in a standard backpack and head over to your friend’s house, college, work, or travel.

On typical use such as web browsing, email, or office applications, the battery can last over 10 hours. For streaming movies, you can expect around eight hours which is plenty for keeping you engaged on short intercontinental flights, or lazing around the house.

Display

The HP 15-dy1036nr looks very sleek thanks to its slim profile, rounded edges, and smooth natural silver finish. The construction is sturdy and doesn’t flex easily. Thanks to the micro-edge screen design, the bezels are tiny giving you a larger viewing area.

The 15.6-inch display has a 1920 x1080 resolution that provides vivid and sharp images that we’ve come to expect from 1080p. It uses IPS technology for impressively wider viewing angles not to mention rich colors. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics on this machine runs all basic tasks that require graphics including light gaming.

Other Considerations

The dual stereo speakers fitted here are some of the best I’ve listened to, pumping clear and high-quality sound with a hint of bass. The sound won’t cover an entire room, but it’s sufficient for streaming movies and videos.

Wireless connectivity comes in the form of Wi-Fi 6 AX 201 and Bluetooth 5.0 technology while the external ports include one USB Type-C port, two USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, an AC smart pin, and one headphone/mic combo.

Bottom Line

If you continuously find yourself in places where plugging into a power source is challenging, I recommend you pick up this laptop. Its robust battery life is great for watching movies both online and offline. Moreover, it’s lightweight for comfortable placement on your lap and looks chic too.

  • Fan runs loud

Unless you’re in the market for a laptop that meets certain criteria, most of us do well with mainstream machines. These laptops easily handle daily computing tasks including web browsing, multimedia, and office applications. The ASUS VivoBook 15 is a great mainstream laptop that you can use for just that, and we especially love streaming movies on its sizeable screen.

Performance

Just like the HP 15-dy1036nr, we looked at above, VivoBook 15 is powered by a 10th generation Core i5-1035G1 chip that’s power-efficient and totally capable of slicing through the day to day tasks. Coupled with 8GB of RAM, you have sufficient power to download movies or stream directly without bottlenecks.

512GB SSD storage space sees to that the system runs smoothly by providing fast data retrieval and offering plenty of space for storing movies, we’re talking 50 plus movies and other files.

Portability

This laptop checks all the portability boxes, weighing 3.75lb and measuring 0.8 inches thick. This essentially means that the machine can fit in a standard laptop bag for traveling. Plus, you can set it on your lap for comfortable viewing.

Many users indicate that the battery life is abysmal as you only get five and a half hours unplugged. It still passes the recommended battery life for watching movies and if you think about it, you should be able to watch three to four movies before the laptop shuts down. But keep the power adapter handy just in case.

Display

VivoBook 15 sports a neutral look that’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to attract any attention to themselves. The all-gray laptop has a textured finish and a shiny deck. The ErgoLift Hinge is a fantastic feature that angles the deck upwards for a supremely comfortable typing experience.

The 15.6-inch NanoEdge display has an 88 percent screen-to-body ratio, offering more screen estate for viewing. The 1920 x 1080 resolution with IPS panel technology deliver vibrancy and clarity needed to make streaming movies worthwhile. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics is a basic graphics solution that renders light games well.

Other Considerations

The ASUS SonicMaster speakers deliver clear sound and deeper bass, so you can happily watch YouTube, Hulu, or Netflix with them. They are, however, not very loud so if you love a bit more volume, I recommend adding a Bluetooth speaker or using headphones.

Bluetooth technology and Gigabit Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) make up the wireless connections while connecting to peripherals are made possible through one USB Type-C, one USB Type-A, USB 2.0, an HDMI port, and a microSD card reader.

Bottom  Line

The VivoBook 15 is a great option for business people, students, and casual users who’re looking for a mainstream machine that they can use for streaming movies. It delivers all-round solid performance, feels light on your lap, and has enough space for your favorite movies.

Detachable laptops redefine portability and versatility in the world of laptops. The HP Elite X2 in particular is a superb detachable laptop for streaming movies. You can opt to watch movies on the laptop or separate the tablet from its base for more comfortable viewing. I love the rich display and the small screen size that keeps wandering eyes at bay.

Performance

The Elite X2 is powered by the 8th generation Core i5-8265U. It’s a mid-range processor suitable for regular computing duties including streaming movies, video playback, browsing, and office applications. It works with 8GB of RAM to breeze through these tasks drama-free and shows potential for handling heavier stuff such as video editing.

The hybrid is equipped with 256GB SSD storage to deliver fast file retrievals, transfers. More importantly, you’ll have the space you need for downloading those, “I’ll watch you later movies and trailers”

Portability

The Elite X2 has some of the best travel-friendly dimensions I have come across. It weighs 2.98lb and is only 0.56 inches thick when attached to the keyboard. Without the keyboard, the tablet weighs a paltry 1.83lb. It’s perfect for frequent travelers, college students, and casual users who don’t want to lug a heavy machine around.

With five to six hours of unplugged use, you can enjoy several movies back to back. I recommend carrying the power adapter whenever you’re leaving home.

Display

The Elite X2 laptop looks very stylish thanks to its rounded edges and a blend of gray, black, and silver. There is a hook on the base of the laptop for storing your stylus and a kickstand for propping the machine while streaming. The tablet attaches to the keyboard magnetically, and the connection feels solid.

The 12.3-inch corning gorilla glass display is scratch resistant and has a 1920 x 1280 resolution. The rich colors and image clarity provide a satisfying experience for streaming movies even in bright sunlight. Additionally, the Intel UHD Graphics 620 render light games capably and on low settings, some demanding titles.

Other Considerations

The speakers on this laptop are tuned by the big boys’ Bang & Olufsen and they deliver an impressive sound that feels rich and the bass deeper. The sound remains clear whether you’re on mid-volume or you’ve gone all the way to max.

Wireless connections on this machine include Wi-Fi 6 AX200 and Bluetooth 5.0 technology while the external connectivity options are two USB Thunderbolt3 ports, one USB Type-C port, and a headphone/mic combo jack. With these connections, you can connect to all the peripherals that you use.

Bottom Line

The Elite X2 laptop is a lightweight machine that allows you to enjoy streaming movies in more ways than one. Whether you’re on a flight, in between classes, or chilling out at home, this touchscreen device allows you to comfortably select your preferred platform, and voila.

  • Bland design

If the 12-inch or 15-inch screens don’t do it for you, why not consider a 17-inch display. And not just any 17-inch, but the one found on the 2020 LG Gram laptop. This sizable screen has a high resolution, that maintains the quality of the images for satisfactory streaming.

Performance

This laptop runs on the 10th generation Core  i7-1065G7 processor. It’s a power-efficient high-end chip that supports faster RAM for enhanced performance. Working with 16GB of RAM, the system breezes through downloads and stays stable as you stream directly.

This baby has the muscle to handle whatever day-to-day tasks you deal with. It comes with 512GB SSD storage for fast boots and app launches, not to mention lots of space for your favorite movies.

Portability

LG Gram laptops have a reputation for being unbelievably lightweight and this machine is no different. It weighs 2.95lb and is only 0.70 inches thick, you’ll hardly feel its weight when it’s in a bag. Moreover, you can comfortably place it on your lap and watch movies wherever you are.

The battery life is indicated as 17 hours but in our tests, we managed to get just over 7 hours before the laptop shut down. It’s less than advertised but close enough for a full day, and plenty of time for binge-watching Netflix.

Display

LG Gram sports a magnesium alloy casing that makes it super sturdy but that’s about it where aesthetics. I think the manufacturers were going for a minimalistic look here because there are no patterns, textures, or trims to draw your eyes to the dark silver colored device.

Looks aside, I love the magnificent 17-inch IPS display with its 2560 x 1600 resolution. It’s incredibly colorful, clear, and has wide viewing angles which makes it perfect for anime movies. The Intel Iris Plus Graphics, on the other hand, is aimed at light games and on low settings, a couple of demanding titles.

Other Considerations

LG Gram features bottom-firing speakers that sound underwhelming and I could hardly make out any bass. The sound tends to distort when you crank the volume up. But this was a problem that was easily solved when I put on my headphones.

Wireless connectivity comes in the form of Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 and Bluetooth 5.0 technology. External connections include one USB Type-C port, two USB Type-A ports, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, microSD card slot, and a headphone/mic combo jack.

Bottom Line

The LG Gram is one of the few truly portable 17-inch laptops on the market. Its incredible lightweight makes it ideal for frequent travelers and other users who prefer using large displays. Speaking of displays, you get an IPS panel with high resolution to make any streaming richly satisfying.

Buying guide for best laptop for watching movies

I have friends who don’t understand why anyone would want to watch movies on a laptop. They simply flip their TVs to the movie channels and voila! Well, if you’re like me, you’ve probably done that and even had popcorn going on, only to doze half-way. No offense, but some of the movies you find there are very boring and dated, to say the least.

So here are some reasons why I prefer using my laptop for streaming movies

1. Easy Access to a Huge Movie Catalog

Are you into romantic movies, old western, action films, thrillers, or comedy? A laptop places an extensive catalog of movies that you most likely won’t find in the cinemas. And with fast and easy access to movie streaming sites, you stream your favorite films over and over and find plenty of new ones from genres you probably never thought you would like.

Watching movies at the theatre doesn’t come cheap, requiring financial and time investment. You’ll spend time and money going to the movies and back, pay for the tickets, drinks, and snacks. Those resources can be saved when you stream movies from the comfort of your home.

2. Portable and Convenient

TVs and theatres are cool but they are stationary which limits where you can watch movies from. With a laptop, you can watch the latest movies anytime, anywhere. Whether you’re at the airport waiting for your flight, at your work desk or favorite coach, in bed, or on the road, just plug in your headphones and you’re good to go.

Watching a movie on a smartphone or tablet requires you to hold up the device to eye-level. After a couple of minutes, your wrists will start to feel the strain, messing with your concentration, and forcing you to find more comfortable ways of holding the device. That is not an issue with laptops.

3. Supported By Major Streaming Channels

There are several movie streaming platforms but not all of them support portable devices like smartphones or tablets. Laptop browsers, however, are supported by most so you’ll hardly have any trouble accessing movie channels, free and otherwise. Some great platforms include Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Torrents, Epix, and HBO.

123Movies, Popcornflix, and FMovies are examples of free movie streaming sites that you can visit. There are tons of them out there and I haven’t verified that all of them are safe. I recommend visiting these free sites using a VPN to keep the sites from tracking and spamming you.

4. Good Screen Size and Projectability

Smartphones and tablets have smaller screens that deny you the rich cinematic details that movie-makers spend months working on. With the best laptops for watching movies, you’ll have a screen that’s large enough to bring the wow into your movie-watching experience.

The versatility of laptops is simply amazing. If you want to enjoy the movie on a larger display, you can hook your laptop to a projector or a TV screen using an HDMI cable. This way, you get the best of both worlds.

5. Minimizes Screen Time Fights

We’ve had fights in our family over who gets to watch what, when, and for how long. And there are several instances when you want to watch a movie only to find someone else passionately watching a weird sport. So, you’ll either watch what they are watching, start world war three over the remote, or find something else to do.

Besides, some films aren’t child-friendly, which means you can only watch them long after the kids have gone to bed. With a laptop, you only need to move to a different room in the house, like your bedroom and watch your movie.

Consider before buying best laptops for watching movies

If you’re buying a laptop specifically for watching movies, your priorities will differ from those of a person buying a machine for work, or gaming. That said, even those purchasing a laptop for work and streaming movies should keep some in mind as they shop.

1. Screen Resolution

The question on most people’s minds is, “Do I need 4K resolution to watch movies on my laptop?” 4k resolution (3840 x 2160) is way sharper delivering more details and a jaw-dropping experience. However, even the 1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1440 resolutions offer good picture quality with vivid and accurate colors. You don’t have to go for 4K but please don’t go below 1080p.

2. Display

There are three main display panels namely, the IPS (In-Plane Switching), TN (Twisted Nematic), and VA (Vertical Alignment). IPS is a high-quality display that delivers a better user experience because of its color accuracy and wide viewing angles. With an IPS display, you and your friends/family can enjoy watching a movie without worrying about image distortion.

Comparatively, TN and VA display panels have higher refresh rates but narrow viewing angles and inferior color reduction. For a movie-watching laptop, I recommend using an IPS display

3. Audio Quality

If you plan on playing the sound out loud, then good speakers are a priority as they will help create an immersive and authentic movie-watching experience. You can find laptops that allow you to choose sounds based on genre. This way you can enjoy a particular sound for romantic movies and a different one for action or comedy.

4. Connectivity

Do you want to stream movies directly online? You’ll need a high-speed and reliable internet connection. A machine with a sub-par Wi-Fi adapter will translate to weak signals, slow connections, and more lag which is no way to watch a movie.

Wired connections are more stable Wi-FI, but if you’re using Wi-Fi, ensure that your preferred laptop has 802.11.A, connectivity. While you’re at it, Bluetooth technology will help you connect to Bluetooth-supported peripherals like ear pods or loudspeakers for a better experience.

5. Battery Life

If you plan on watching movies on the go, then you’ll need a laptop with plenty of battery life. Because nothing is more frustrating than running out of battery smack in the middle of an interesting movie.

We recommend machines that offer 5 hours of unplugged use so you can watch 2 films at the very least. The market has laptops that offer longer hours, like 7 to ten hours which is really good, but 5 hours should be your minimum aim

6. Storage Space

If you intend to download movies as opposed to streaming directly, then storage space matters because the more space you have, the more movies you can download. Some laptops come with 256GB storage space, others have 500GB, and others offer 1TB or more.

A typical 2-hour 1080p film takes up around 5GB space so even with low storage, you’ll be able to store around fifty movies, which is not bad at all. Plus, you can delete the movies you’ve already watched to make room for new ones.

7. Processor

Movie-watching isn’t that CPU-intensive so you don’t need a powerful processor to stream movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime. So the point boils down to what else you’ll be using your laptop for. If you plan on using the laptop to run office applications, browsing, and other casual use, then a Core i3 or its AMD equivalent will be sufficient.

But if you would like to run apps like Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, or other CPU-intensive tasks like video editing then a Core i7 processor is a better option. I recommend working with a Core i5 processor (or higher) to ensure the machine is powerful enough to handle intensive tasks when necessary and won’t run into lag while you’re streaming.

Frequently asked questions

Can you watch movies on a laptop?

You can watch movies on a laptop because these devices have the specs to support movie watching. From the screen resolution to the display and access to a vast library of movies plus movie streaming websites, you can watch and enjoy movies on a laptop. Better yet, you can watch the movie anywhere.

How do I watch movies on my laptop comfortably?

To watch movies comfortably, place the laptop on a stable surface where the top of the screen is close to or about eye level. If you’re relaxing on a chair or in bed, place the laptop on your thighs while ensuring your back and neck are fully supported to keep you from hunching over.

Where can I watch free movies on my laptop?

There are plenty of sites where you can find free movies but you should ensure that the site is legal. Paying for a movie doesn’t make it legal and free isn’t always an indication of piracy. Some sites include Sony Crackle, Kanopy, PopCornflix, 123Movies, IMDb TV, Roku Channel, and FMovies.

Is 123movies a safe site?

123Movies is a popular free movie streaming service but one that faces legal challenges on grounds of piracy. In some countries, the service is geo-restricted which has led to numerous cloned 123Movies sites many of which host viruses, malware, and hackers. The safest way to visit the site is through a VPN such as NordVPN to mask your IP address.

What online movie sites are safe?

Popcornflix, ConTV (formerly Viewster), Sony Crackle, Tubi TV, Free Movies Cinema, Pluto TV, Top Documentary Films, Retrovision Classic Movies, Archive.org, Vimeo, and Vudu are examples of online movie sites that are legal and safe to use. You can watch classics, drama, comedy, thriller, horror, action films and so much more.

Are movies free on YouTube premium?

Movies on YouTube premium are not free but for good reason. The monthly subscription you pay ensures that you will watch movies without seeing a single ad. The ads are not bad, but they have a way of interrupting all the interesting parts, severally. With YouTube premium, you can concentrate on the movie ad-free.

How many GB is a 2 hour movie?

Netflix tells us that when streaming directly, you use around 1GB of data every hour. That’s for standard definition (SD) videos. High Definition (HD) videos use 3GB hourly, while 4K streams consume 7GB per hour. So a two-hour movie will consume 2G on SD, 6GB on HD version, and 14GB for 4K streaming.

Why does my movie keep buffering?

It’s mostly a connection issue caused by slow internet speeds. You need at least 5 Mbps to stream high definition movies and 25 Mbps to stream 4K movies on Netflix. If your home has multiple streamers, ensure that your internet service provides at least 50 Mbps. You can close other tabs to keep them from running downloads in the background.

How Do I resolve the Out of Memory Errors on my screen?

Insufficient RAM causes the “Out of Memory” pop-ups when you try to run Netflix. As long as your laptop has 4GB of RAM at the very least, you can close other apps and documents to free up memory. Restarting the machine will also free up memory and resolve the errors.

Is 8GB RAM enough for streaming movies?

8GB RAM is enough for streaming your favorite movies on Netflix but at HD 720p or 1080p. If you want to stream at 4K then you’ll need more RAM. In this case, a laptop with 12GB or 16GB RAM is sufficient for streaming 4K video quality.
