Pros
  • No bloatware
  • 16GB MicroSD card included in the purchase
  • Stunning display
  • Powerful processor
Cons
  • The keyboard layout may feel confusing
  • Can get very warm

The Acer Predator Triton 500 earns its name thanks to powerful hardware including a high-end processor and fantastic graphics that will have you preying and obliterating your competition as you enjoy the scenery. Throw in tons of memory and a lightweight chassis and you have a winner.

Performance

The powerful, and high-end 9th generation Intel Hexa-Core i7-9750H gives life to this laptop alongside 32GB of RAM to deliver smooth performance for gaming. You won’t find any slowdowns here whether you have 10 or 15-plus chrome tabs open or indulging in The Witcher 3.

You always find laptops heating whenever you’re engaging in an intensive game or other CPU-intensive tasks. Thanks to Intel Turbo Boost Technology, the CPU’s clock rate speeds up whenever there is a heavy workload. Don’t expect a major jump in the clock rate, just what is reasonably needed to keep the machine within safe power and temperature limits.

The laptop comes with 1TB storage which is sufficient for most gamers. You can store tens of games (depending on their size of course), videos, and other docs that you would like to store there. The machine is unlocked which allows you to upgrade your storage in case you need to, cool right?.

Portability

Triton 500 weighs around 4.41lb and measures 0.7-inches in thickness which makes it quite slim. The lid, in particular, is ultra-thin and almost flimsy while the rest of the body feels pretty solid and capable of handling everyday use. Thanks to its travel-friendly dimensions, you won’t have to worry about dislodging anything on your back as you carry the laptop in your backpack.

I was impressed by the battery life that lasted just over three and a half hours before I had to plug it in. That said, you’ll want to keep the power adapter handy.

Display

This laptop is packaged in a smooth all-black chassis with light-blue accents and angular edges. It looks very sleek and expensive but probably won’t fit into an office setting. Apart from the bottom bezel, that’s super wide, all other bezels are thin and it always seems like they disappear when you’re gaming.

The screen is 15.6-inches wide with 1920 x 1080 resolution. The display is so colorful and bright that playing visually stunning games like Overwatch are an absolute delight.

The laptop ships with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics with 6GB VRAM. It handles demanding titles with ease and enhances the overall image quality to make it more real. Playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider on max settings was a mind-blowing experience; it brought out all the shadows, textures, and details of this game superbly.

Other Considerations

Triton 500 comes with a plethora of connectivity options including three USB 3.1 ports, one Type-C Thunderbolt 3 port, one mini DisplayPort, an HDMI port, an Ethernet LAN port, and. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity is also available.

The keyboard’s layout will take some getting used to, so if you find yourself hitting the wrong buttons, you’re in good company. We’ve done it too. Key travel is good and you get a good amount of feedback whether you’re gaming or typing, but my favorite thing about this keyboard is the RGB lighting.

Bottom line

The Predator Triton 500 combines beauty with a trim design, power, speed, and a crisp clear display to deliver cutting-edge gaming results. For the ardent gamer, this is one of those investments that you’ll absolutely enjoy.

Laptops are built with either HDD or SSD storage. Since each storage method has its good qualities, choosing one over the other means losing out on something. The VivoBook K571 combines both storage methods to give you tons and tons of storage space.

Performance

This machine is powered by a 10th Intel Core i7-10750H processor and along with 24GB of RAM to ensure your apps, programs, and games run smoothly. I get very impatient if I have to wait more than a few seconds for tabs and apps to open so I was happily surprised to find that this machine didn’t test it

I also found that this processor held up very well during gaming and as I worked on some video edits. It did heat up a bit but the fans kicked in to keep the machine cool. When the room was quiet, I could hear the fans but they weren’t distracting loud and were drowned by my gaming.

Storage is always a big deal, with many users reaching for external hard drives to store their files. Luckily, the VivoBook K571 offers a dual and generous storage option. With both Optane memory and SSD, you have lots of space for installing games, downloading videos, and storing music, photo albums, and even college/work files worry-free.

Portability

This VivoBook K571 tips the scales at 4.72lb which feels a little heavy but I would say it’s a reasonable weight if you need to throw it into a bag and commute. I love that it’s only 0.8 inches thick so it can fit nicely in most backpacks.

The battery lasts anywhere between two to three hours before you need to reach for the charger. If you intend to visit an area without a power source for more than 3 hours with your laptop, we recommend light gaming to ensure it doesn’t run out.

Display

There are no bells and whistles here, just a smoothly finished black laptop that can pass for a normal business laptop. I appreciate the 7.4mm (thin) side bezels that make for a more immersive experience as you game or stream videos.

The 15.6-inch Full HD is color-rich and has amazing contrast, so that blacks are black, not some weird shade. Gaming, watching, movies, and reading on this laptop was a beautiful experience because there were no blurs and more importantly the images didn’t distort no matter the angles I viewed the screen at.

This machine comes with the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti graphics that provide fast and superior performance that allows it to keep up with popular games and even modern titles. You can play Assassins Creed (1,2 and 3) Half Life, Brotherhood, Apex Legends. Overwatch, and PUBG among others.

Other Considerations

There are plenty of connectivity options on this laptop including a USB Type-C port, one USB 3.0 Type-A port, two USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI port, an RJ45 Ethernet port, combo audio jack, and an SD/SDHC/SDXC card reader. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity is also available

The backlit keyboard is awesome and expected for those late-night gaming sessions. The keys are well-spaced and although the travel is shallow, they have remarkable feedback so typing still feels good. The touchpad is smaller than you’ll find on other laptops but it’s smooth and takes instructions well.

Bottom line

The VivoBook K571 is a fast laptop and offers excellent performance thanks to its large memory as well as the Optane and SSD storage options. It’s perfect for students and those in the workforce, offering a middle ground between entry-level gaming laptops and top-of-the-line best gaming laptop under 2000 dollars.

  • Great for creative work

Cons
  • Limited connectivity options

If a tablet doesn’t live up to your expectations and the windows laptops don’t make the cut either, a MacBook just might be what you’re looking for. This small-sized 2020 Apple MacBook Pro is lightweight and handles multitasking well making it a great option for executives who want to engage in a little gaming in between their busy lifestyles.

Performance

When it comes to performance 10th generation Core i5 processors are just as good as 8th generation processors. They are fast, power-efficient which minimizes their power consumption and increases battery life.

This  2020 Apple MacBook Pro is powered by a 10th gen Core i5 processor working hand in hand with 16GB of RAM for a buttery smooth experience. Apps load fast while multiple chrome tabs, known for hogging memory, doesn’t cause any noticeable delays. According to Apple, you’ll experience faster performance in 4K editing and rendering.

The laptop comes with 1TB SSD storage achieves fast read/write speeds which makes this the perfect machine for hoarding your favorite videos, games, and work files.

Portability

This is one of the few best gaming laptop under 2000 dollars that checks all the portability boxes. It weighs 3.1lb and measures only 0.16 inches in thickness making it super lightweight and portable. You can carry it from one place to another with ease.

The battery life on this laptop is solid, offering up to 10hours of light use like browsing and around 8 hours of video playback. The gaming results were much lower due to the intensity of the games.

Display

This silver colored laptop looks gorgeous. Maybe I am a little biased (hey, it’s Apple) but the machine looks very sleek. Even so, it may be time for Apple to rethink the thick bezels but I found that they don’t hinder my viewing.

The laptop comes with a smaller 13-inch screen but don’t let that fool you because it comes with a backlit Retina display so that its 2560 x 1600 resolution renders sharp, clear color-rich, and beautiful images. Gaming or watching movies on this laptop feels very immersive and enjoyable.

The processor comes with integrated Intel Iris Plus which manages to deliver efficient photo processing and 4K video editing, which is excellent for content creators. The gaming performance is relatively good, but it may not support demanding AAA titles. You can get away with Fortnite or Dirt Rally 2.

Other Considerations

The connectivity options on this laptop are rather interesting. You only get four Thunderbolt  USB Type-C ports and one audio jack. Yes, that’s it. I think that’s futuristic and a good idea but it may be limiting if you need to use legacy USB-A ports. In such a case, you’ll need to purchase an adapter. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity is available

The 2020 Apple MacBook Pro features a Magic keyboard that has well-spaced keys that are responsive, quiet, and comfortable to type on. The key travel is decent and satisfying. The trackpad feels spacious, responsive, and takes instructions well.

Bottom Line

Apple continues to bring a lot of ingenuity into its products and this 2020 MacBook Pro is no different. Boasting speedy performance, gorgeous display, decent graphics, and futuristic connections. If you’re a content creator looking for a machine that you can play light games on, this laptop is worth checking out.

Many PC and console gamers can never wrap their heads around tablet gaming. Largely due to the lackluster graphics that plague tablets and dependency on microtransactions. Well, all that changed with the Microsoft Surface Pro. It has fantastic specs including powerful hardware and an awesome display that has many of us thinking otherwise.

Performance

The insider info on the Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor is that it’s a high-end CPU designed for laptops. It’s loved for its better thermal characteristics, higher clock speed, and lower power consumption, perfect for gaming and other CPU-intensive tasks.

And that’s what you’ll find under the Microsoft Surface Pro’s hood. 16 GB of RAM accompanies this powerful processor to make all your computing tasks easy. You can weave seamlessly through multiple tabs and apps, or enjoy mid-range games without lags.

The tablet offers 512 SSD, which is the minimum you should have in a gaming laptop under 2000. Since most Surface Pro users are business travelers and executives, you’ll have plenty of storage for work stuff, your favorite videos, photos, and games.

Portability

Weighing 1.70lb, this machine is almost weightless in the world of gaming computers. This slim profile means you can hold it in your hands for longer periods without strain, plus it will fit easily into a briefcase sleeve or backpack. Looking for an on-the-go gaming companion, start here.

The battery life on this machine is just over 10 hours, but this is pegged on normal use like browsing, using office applications, and watching videos. I haven’t personally tested the Surface Pro 7 in gaming but going by how much power games devour, I can tell you that it won’t run anywhere close to 10 hours if you’re gaming back to back.

Display

This surface Pro 7 is available in matte black which looks cool and I love the Alcantara fabric on the Type Cover which is hopefully more stain resistant. Like most Microsoft Surface tablets, the bezels here are thick, and depending on how you feel about bezels, it may be a hit or a miss.

The 12.3-inch touchscreen is highly responsive and supports stylus input, so if you like to doodle or take notes on your tablet, go ahead and purchase the pen. The screen has a high 2736 x 1824 resolution resulting in sharp and richly colored images that make gaming or movie watching enjoyable.

Speaking of gaming, here we have integrated Iris Plus graphics. Before you turn away, Iris Plus offers great performance allowing you to play games like  F.E.A.R., DOOM 3, Half-Life, Fortnite, and Minecraft. On lower resolutions, you can also play Forza Horizon 4 and Gears 5 which is not bad for a tablet, right?

Other Considerations

Surface Pro 7 comes with the elusive USB Type-C port, one USB 3.0, one microSDXC card reader, and a headphone/mic jack. The tablet supports Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 5.0 technology. This machine has fewer connectivity options, largely because the manufacturers had to make some sacrifices to keep the tablet slim and portable.

As far as the Type Cover keyboard goes, it has a deep travel and bouncy feel that makes you want to keep typing on and on and on… The touchpad feels smooth and is responsive to touch.

Bottom Line

Surface Pro 7 is an attractive 2-in-1 laptop that offers portability and the much-needed capacity to play lower and medium-range games. For the business traveler stuck at the airport, the college student on a break, or casual user looking for a distraction, you can find it here.

For professional architects, 3D animators, cinematographers, videographers, and other people in the creative workforce, finding a laptop that meets your work and entertainment needs can be difficult. Acer has designed the ConceptD 5 Pro to deal with just that, and at a reasonable budget too.

Performance

I don’t know if Acer had gaming in mind when they developed this laptop for the creative workforce, but they make use of the 9th generation Intel Core i7-9750H that is featured in many best gaming laptops under $2000. It’s one of the most powerful laptop CPUs capable of handling workstation, gaming, and other high-performance tasks. On this laptop, it’s paired with 32GB of RAM for efficient and super fast results.

Because of the CPU’s great computing performance, it can get very warm when you push it at maximum loads (it’s a productivity machine) for extended periods. To counter this, the manufacturers invested in a cooling system that required considerable space and unfortunately made the laptop rather bulky.

At 512GB, storage isn’t so bad, but I would have expected more or perhaps even an HDD/SSD combo considering the targeted users. That said, there’s much you can do with the provided storage.

Portability

This laptop weighs 5.51lb, so yes it is heavy, and you may want to keep it in one place rather than move around. If you have to move with it, you’ll be relieved to know that its dimensions are surprisingly travel-friendly so it will fit into most backpacks.

As far as the battery is concerned, you can get three or 4 hours out of it. This is fairly reasonable given the tasks it is meant to handle, so yes, don’t leave your house without the charger.

Display

The ConceptD 5 Pro looks very interesting. It’s matte black, with angled corners, and built using metal. If you work in a strict environment I believe this can be a good option. A word of caution though, using the laptop in a cramped space may see the angled edges digging into your wrists. With continuous use, it’s going to hurt.

The 15.6-inch screen is encased in narrow bezels, with the bottom one being the exception, and features the magical 4K resolution (3840 x 2160). As expected, the screen is crisp, colors vibrant, and the contrast, characteristics which are crucial in the creative line of work and a bonus for watching movies.

This laptop is equipped with NVIDIA Quadro T1000 discrete graphics with 4GB of VRAM. These graphics are an okay option for work but may not be able to handle modern AAA games. In low settings, you can play Doom Eternal, Apex Legends, Borderlands, Farming Simulator, and Dota 2 among others.

Other Considerations

To connect to peripherals you have one USB Type-C port, two USB 3.1 ports. One USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI port. These connections are rather few, compared to other laptops, but they still got the job one. For internal connectivity, you have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.

The keyboard’s layout is standard so you can get up to speed with no issues. The keys are properly spaced, have reasonable speed, deep key travel, quiet, and comfortable to use. I love the warm amber backlighting that radiates a soft and inspiring light.

The trackpad is located a little to the left. It has a smooth surface with built-in buttons that are precise and responsive.

Bottom line

ConceptD 5 Pro is an amazing laptop that comes with a high-quality display that’s perfect for those who appreciate stunning views. It packs a serious amount of power to handle creative tasks and some gaming as well. I recommend it as a work and play laptop.

Cons
  • Suitable for low and mid-range games

Buying your very first gaming laptop under $2000 can feel somewhat daunting because you want to be sure that the processor is fast enough, memory sufficient, and the screen decent. The ASUS  X509 is one of the best options out there offering solid performance in day-to-day tasks and light gaming too.

Performance

The 10th generation Intel Core i7-1065G7 we find here is the same one as that on the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 we looked at above. Definitely, a high-end processor that when combined with the 20GB of RAM available here delivers speedy launches to ensure your day to day tasks run smoothly.

We found that you can open multiple tabs without experiencing any hiccups and the laptop doesn’t warm up easily. This changes a little when you start gaming or doing any light photo editing but this is quickly taken care of by the cooling fans.

4TB of storage is available on this laptop. This is quite generous considering other gaming laptops offer 1TB or 2TB at most. Whether you’re a college student with exceedingly large files or have a gigantic music library, huge photo albums, you’ll still have plenty of space left over for your games.

Portability

This gaming laptop checks the portability list seeing as it weighs 3.97lb and 0.9 inches thick. So, maybe it’s a little thick, but you’ll find that it slides easily into backpacks allowing you to take it wherever you want to go.

The battery is decent by gaming laptop standards. You can get three to four hours of gaming out of it. If you’re on the road a lot, be sure to throw in the charger so you don’t run out of juice.

Display

Although this laptop is made of plastic, it has a brushed metal finish and its slate grey color makes it look very chic. And I wouldn’t worry too much about durability because the chassis and the sides around the lid are reinforced using a metal plate, so it’s quite sturdy.

The 15.6-inch screen is surrounded by narrow bezels and has a 1920 x 1080 resolution that offers richly beautiful and clear images that make any streaming or gaming enjoyable.

Unlike the VivoBook we looked at earlier, the Asus X509 comes with integrated Intel Iris Plus graphics. So maybe you won’t be able to run heavy and graphically intensive games, but you can breeze through  Counter-Strike and other light games. On lower settings, PUBG is also playable.

Other Considerations

Connectivity-wise you have a decent number of options including one USB Type-C port, one USB 3.2 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port, microSD reader, and a combo jack. If you need to connect to a wired connection, you can use the USB Type-C.

The keyboard feels comfortable for typing with long keystrokes and good feedback. You’ll notice that the number pad is a little shrunk down, possibly because of space. The touchpad feels accurate and is very responsive.

Bottom Line

The Asus X509 is a great laptop for day to day computing tasks, editing photos, streaming videos, and playing non-intensive games. If this meets your requirements, we recommend you give this machine a second look.

Pros

Cons
  • Underwhelming graphics

A higher resolution is always desirable especially if you’re a serious gamer, video animator, photographer, or creative professional. This Lenovo Yoga C940 laptop was designed just for us, because we are ones with the discerning eye, picking up, appreciating every detail in an image. It’s a high-resolution machine that renders beautiful images and a whole lot more.

Performance

This machine is powered by the 10th generation Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor with 16GB of RAM to provide the kind of speed and performance we expect from a high-end processor. You can have multiple chrome tabs open and have YouTube videos running without experiencing any hiccups. It’s smooth all the way.

I noticed that heavy loads tend to warm up the machine which can make it uncomfortable to use while on your laps, but the fans kick in and make short work of it. The laptop cools down within minutes so there’s no worrying about internal components melting down.

Yoga C940 offers 2TB storage space which is quite generous and expected at this price tag. It improves the read/write speed and is plenty much for installing games and storing your photo albums, music, and other files.

Portability

The numbers here are astounding. It weighs a paltry 2.98lb and is only 0.6 inches. It feels almost weightless in a backpack, which is perfect for those of us who move around a lot, in search of creativity, or to meet up with clients and friends. Seriously, if portability is a big deal for you, this machine is a worthy option.

The battery can last for up to 8 hours on video playback, but if you’re just gaming or engaging in CPU-intensive tasks, the hours reduce drastically, in some cases by half.

Display

Yoga C940 is a beautiful machine. I love the mica color, the smooth rounded edges, and pristine build. I think building a soundbar into the laptop’s hinges was an ingenious idea as it enhances the sound quality of this machine.

Within the 14-inch screen is where the action is at. With 3840 x 2160 resolutions, the images are nothing short of stunning. Playing Assassin’s Creed on this laptop is nothing short of spectacular and so is watching Altered Carbon. For professional photographers, working with this screen will be such a delight.

The screen responds impressively to touch and supports stylus input allowing you to annotate documents, scribble notes, or doodle. For those of us who keep misplacing our pens now and then, there’s a pen garage on the laptop’s back that also charges the pen when it’s docked.

The integrated Intel Iris Plus graphics sort of put a damper on this machine’s abilities and I wish the manufacturer had considered discrete graphics instead. Even so, Iris Plus does a fairly decent job as we enjoyed playing Dirt 3 with zero issues. If you can lower the settings, you can try out some modern games.

Other Considerations

Like several other laptops on this list that have limited connection options namely one USB 3.1 port, two Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C), and a headphone/mic combo jack. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity is available.

The backlit keyboard is a delight. I love the large, curved keys that offer good key travel. The keyboard is quite spacious making it comfortable for use by those with large or small hands. The touchpad is just as efficient with a responsive surface that acknowledges and executes instructions.

Bottom Line

I was impressed by the Yoga C940. It has a premium feel, stunning display, strong performance, and decent battery life. It’s perfect for content creators, whether professional or amateur, business people, students, and everyone else who appreciates superior quality displays.

If you’re looking for a glamorous laptop that embraces the kind of productivity that woos senior executives and just about anyone who loves stylish, the HP EliteBook 840 G5 is a top contender. It’s a beautiful business laptop that allows you to move from work to play and back to senior matters in a click.

Performance

The 840 G5 is powered by the 8th generation Intel Core i5-8350U, a powerful processor that works with the generous 64GB of RAM to deliver unrivaled speed and performance that will have you conduct your day to day work without choking.

If you want to open 20 tabs for your research, listen to music in the background, and keep a gaming app open for occasional engagement, go right ahead. I love that this machine stays relatively cool as you work and when the fans kick in, they are not obstructively loud.

2TB of storage is sufficient for both work and personal use. You can download several light games and still have plenty left over for large work files, videos, ebooks, music, and everything you can think of.

Portability

I’m impressed by this laptop’s slim profile and minimal weight. It comes in at 3.26lb and measures 0.7 inches in thickness. It has excellent travel dimensions for business travelers, college students, and creatives who love spending time outdoors or at coffee shops to get their creativity going.

The battery life here is roughly 6 hours which can keep you going for at least half a day. However, any intensive task will eat into the battery’s life, possibly reducing it by an hour or two.

Display

Did I say this machine is a thing of beauty? The machine sports a full aluminum exterior, with smooth rounded edges and a silvery finish. It looks clean and simple but exudes an air of elegance that is intrinsic to many HP laptops. Top and bottom bezels but the sides are narrow, so they don’t take away from the screen.

The 14-inch screen is Full HD (1920 x 1080) so typically it provides clear, bright, and vibrant images. It’s the kind of screen you want to watch movies on, so feel free to check out that new movie on Netflix.

For some reason, HP decided to equip this laptop with UHD 620 Integrated Graphics. These graphics cannot run modern games. So while games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, GTA V, or Minecraft won’t run here, you can still indulge in simple online games.

Other Considerations

External connections include one Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C), two USB 3.1 ports, an HDMI port, an Ethernet LAN (RJ-45), a smart card reader, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Internally, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 technology are available.

We have a backlit keyboard here that is well-spaced, and unlike other gaming laptops that have cramped num pads, this one is properly spaced for comfortable use. The key travel is short and the keys feel clicky as you type.

Most touchpads have clickable buttons at the bottom but 840 G5 has its buttons positioned at the top. It’s responsive, smooth, and captures instructions with precision.

Bottom Line

Ultimately this HP 840 G5 laptop is a workhorse capable of delivering solid performance for productivity and multimedia engagement. While you may not be able to play the latest titles here, you can still enjoy simple games in between busy work schedules, and sometimes, that’s all we need.

Many gaming laptops on the market have flimsy lids that bend with a little pressure, and their overall design is anything but durable. Spending $2000 on a laptop with questionable durability is a no-no, that’s why we love the Lenovo ThinkPad 490. There are no bells and whistles here, just a solidly-built machine that can take on everyday use like a champ.

Performance

Running this laptop is the 10th generation Intel Core i7-10510U, a power-efficient processor that is paired with 20GB of RAM to ensure that all your apps and programs run with buttery smoothness. I found that playing games for a while then switching to more serious work without having to count the minutes.

The machine is a serious workhorse. I breezed through work files and light games and was impressed by how cool and quiet the laptop remained. And when the fan kicked in it was barely noticeable. A thumbs up because I don’t like being distracted from my work.

The laptop comes with 2TB storage. This seems like a sweet spot for many gaming laptops which is reasonable. You get to install games and keep them, without worrying space is running out. Well, plus any other files that you have.

Portability

This laptop leans on the heavier end of our portability checklist. It weighs 4lb, which is heavier than other machines we’ve reviewed here, but certainly portable. It’s 0.7-inches thick so it will fit into your usual size backpack for easy transportation.

For everyday tasks, you can rely on the battery to last up to 10 hours on a single charge. However, the light games playable here may reduce that time to around 3 hours.

Display

Okay, so the T490 is not a looker but you’ve got to have some appreciation for the smooth rounded edges, and red accents on the touchpad buttons that break the all-black color. Perhaps what’s more important is the strong internal frame that makes the chassis and the lid firm and stiff. When holding this laptop in your hands, you get the sense of a sturdy laptop that won’t bow to pressure easily.

The laptop has a 14-inch screen surrounded by visibly chunky bezels that could use some chopping down. You get a touchscreen device allowing you to scroll up and down without using a mouse or keyboard. Further, the screen is Full HD  (1920 X1080), well known for crisp, clear, and vibrant images. It’s a great laptop for binge-watching movies and videos.

I’m sure you’re wondering what games you can play here. Well, T490 comes with Intel UHD Integrated Graphics which is basic level, capable of running light games and on lower settings some demanding titles.

Other Considerations

The laptop has a sizable number of external connections to keep you connected to peripherals. You get two USB 3.1 ports, one Thunderbolt 3 (Type-C), one USB 3.1 Type-C port, an HDMI port, a microSD card reader, an Ethernet port, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity options are also available.

Although the keyboard lacks a dedicated number pad, typing on this keyboard is very rewarding as the keys feel soft, precise and offer a decent amount of key travel. Like the HP 840 G5, the buttons on the touchpad are at the top. Using the touchpad feels just as good as it’s very smooth and responsive.

Bottom Line

If you’re interested in durability rather than looks, you’ll find a reliable companion in the Lenovo ThinkPad T490. It’s sturdy, comes with a power-efficient processor, Full HD for excellent images, and plenty of memory and storage space for everyday computing tasks including light gaming.

10. Dell Inspiron 15 3593

Pros
  • Fast processor
  • Looks attractive and professional
  • Lots of memory
  • Useful keyboard
Cons
  • Incompatible with most games
  • No backlit keyboard

We’ve looked at high resolutions, 4K resolutions and now we’re curious about what you can find in a lower resolution laptop. The Dell Inspiron 15 3593 is our best choice for this investigation. It comes with the same processor we’ve seen in higher resolution laptops and has solid specs, but will it game? Let’s find out.

Performance

As mentioned earlier, this 10th generation Intel Core i7-1065G7 is found in the Asus X509 and Lenovo Yoga C940 laptops. Here it works with 64GB of RAM, which is extremely generous, resulting in speedy performances that awed us.

From fast boots to app launches, and seamless transitions between different programs, this laptop is suitable for the ever-busy user who needs a reliable machine that can multitask without hiccuping or taking ‘forever’ to get programs running.

For college students, business people, busy executives, or creative writers, this machine is more than capable of meeting your everyday work and entertainment needs Like several other laptops here, the laptop offers 2TB storage with favorable read/write speeds. You’ll have plenty of storage space for work, school, and personal stuff.

Portability

Just like the Lenovo T490, this laptop weighs a ton. Well, not really, but at 4.46lb, it is heavier than many other laptops on our list. Can you carry it to work or college? Yes, you can, because it can fit in a backpack. You may feel the weight on your back, a bit.

The battery life on the Dell 15 3593 can last up to five hours on a single charge, but this is for web browsing, a little video, and work. If you add gaming, then you’ll probably have around three hours. Yes, I have said it before but don’t leave the house without your charger especially if you’re going to be out all day.

 Display

This laptop has a plastic shell that is concealed under a black matte finish and has smooth and rounded edges. The design is very traditional with wide bezels and all but looks very professional and suitable for work environments.

The 15.6-inch screen responds to touch allowing you to scroll or tap rather than use the keyboard. The screen has a 1366 x 768 resolution which gives limited viewing angles. If you shift angles you’ll end up seeing the dots that make up the images on your screen, a situation that will take away from your viewing experience.

Graphics-wise, the laptop ships with the Intel Iris Plus Integrated Graphics. While these graphics are better than the Intel UHD graphics, you still won’t be able to enjoy any modern games, thanks in part to the low-resolution screen. However, you can enjoy Candy Crush or card games.

Other Considerations

On a brighter note, you get plenty of connectivity options on this laptop including two USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.1 (Type-C), an HDMI port, ethernet port, SD reader, and a headphone/mic combo jack. The laptop also connects to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.

The laptop has a full-layout keyboard, although the number pad is a little cramped. Overall, the keyboard is comfortable to use and the keys have a decent travel with clicky feedback. The touchpad provides decent accuracy and responds fast and in case you don’t want to use it, go ahead and tap the screen.

Bottom Line

The Dell 15 3593 is clearly not the first choice for anyone looking to play any modern games on their laptops. However, it’s a good choice for everyday use. If you need a laptop for work and casual gaming, you can look it up.

How to choose best laptop gaming laptop under 2000 dollars

Splurging $2000 on a gaming laptop is a dream come true for many gamers (and for the salesperson receiving your hard-earned cash too). It pays to know something about the laptop you’re buying.

If you want to go beyond the flashy sales talk and understand some of the technical stuff, here are some basics you should know about your laptop.

1. Processor

The processor or CPU (central processing unit) sits on a special seat known as a socket that is found on the motherboard (main circuit board). The processor works like our brains, performing calculations, and running programs.

The clock speed on a processor is worth looking at too. It’s symbolized by GHz (gigahertz) and refers to the number of instructions the processor can handle per second. The GHz on Core i7 processors, for example, ranges 2.9GHz to 4.2GHz, and the higher the number, the faster the processor.

Okay, so what about overclocking? Intel processor models that end with a K are unlocked and can be overclocked. Off the top of my head, the overclockable processor I can think of is the Core i7 8700k. Even so, the processors on gaming laptops are pretty powerful so you don’t need to worry about overclocking.

2. Graphics

The graphics processing unit  (GPU) is an integral component of a gaming laptop. We’ll be spending some time here since this is a core feature. The GPU is responsible for rendering images on your screen.

Graphics can either be integrated or dedicated. For the purposes of this article, we’ll focus on dedicated (discrete) graphics since that’s what you need for a gaming laptop. A dedicated GPU comes with dedicated memory known as VRAM (video memory).

The VRAM is built into the GPU to give it fast access to stored data than if the GPU were to go looking for this same data from the system’s memory. If your laptop has insufficient VRAM, you’ll experience performance issues, stuttering, distorted images, or screen tearing.

Can you install more VRAM? As mentioned earlier, the video memory is built into the GPU, so the only way to get more VRAM is by upgrading to another graphics card that has more VRAM.

Okay, so how much VRAM do I need? This depends on various things including the screen resolution, the games you’re playing, and the settings as well.

The more resolution your monitor has, the more VRAM you’ll need to process any one single frame because frames are incredibly taxing to render at high resolutions. A single 1080P frame takes up less space than a single 1440p frame. In other words, gaming on a 4k monitor will require more VRAM than on a 1080P monitor

Similarly, graphics-intensive games like Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds or Shadow of War that offer impressive scenery and details use more VRAM than less intensive games like Minecraft. Even at a higher resolution, a game like Minecraft will not use lots of VRAM as it doesn’t have lots of detail.

Lastly, the settings you play at, determine how much VRAM will be used to render frames for that specific game. If you play your games in high settings, more data will be needed to render each frame translating into more VRAM used. The opposite is true as well.

On average, a 1080P monitor can work with 2GB to 6GB of VRAM, while a 1440P monitor will need anywhere between 4GB to 8GB of VRAM. If you’re in the 4k arena, go for 8GB+ of VRAM.

To put things in perspective, you can run games like Dota2, League of Legends, or TF2 on a 1080P monitor and use around 2GB of VRAM. At max settings, running Quantum Break or PUBG on the same 1080P monitor will need more than 4GB of VRAM.

3. RAM

Unlike the VRAM that’s purely dedicated to sending data to the GPU, RAM offers temporary storage for data that the processor needs to access for fast loading. Every laptop will come with a certain amount of RAM so the thing you need to ensure that this memory is sufficient for your gaming needs

A game like Mass Effect: Andromeda requires a minimum of 8GB of RAM to run. Without 8GB the game simply won’t run. I know many people who swear by 8GB but I don’t recommend working with minimum requirements. Besides, if you have other programs running in the background, the gaming experience will be so poor.

Having more RAM will certainly make your computing tasks more pleasant and 16GB of RAM is sufficient for today’s games. Some processors come with 32GB of RAM, and these machines are becoming increasingly popular for those who want to be future-proofed.

4. Display and Resolution

Gaming laptops are available in different sizes but I see a sweet spot in the 15.6-inch range. This size can be lower or go higher depending on your preference. As gamers, we all love bigger screens so the thing you need to remember is larger displays tend to be weightier.

If you only plan to use the laptop in one place or to move from one room to another within your home, then a large display can work. If you have to take the laptop to work or campus, larger laptops can feel weighty to drag around and even challenging to fit into a standard backpack.

Display panels are made of pixels (tiny dots that we normally don’t pay any attention to) and the more pixels the display has, the more detail can fit on-screen. At this price point, 1920 x 1080 (or 1080P) is the absolute minimum you can expect from your machine.

1080P images look sharper letting you see fine details without any of the graininess you find on a low-resolution screen. Laptops with higher resolutions like 2560 x 1440 or 3120 x 1800 take the display quality to the next level. That said, higher resolutions use more power which can potentially harm battery life.

5. Storage

You’re right in the middle of a crucial game when a message pops up on your screen announcing that you’re running low on disk space. At that moment your mind is reeling, thinking about the game that pop-up just messed up. Yes, we’ve all been there.

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are more common in newer gaming laptops due to their speediness and heavy-duty performance. Games come in different sizes and have different storage requirements.

Many Modern AAA games require anything between 25GB and 50GB of storage, with others going up to 100GB. Games like Witcher 3 or FIFA 19 take up more than 50GB of storage. Clearly, a laptop with a storage capacity of 256GB can only store 4 or 5 games which means you’ll need to uninstall one or two of them to install a new one.

To run your games optimally, we recommend 512GB to 1TB storage for gaming. If you also do professional video editing or love collecting movies, then you may want to consider up to 3T storage.

6. Connectivity

Literally, all modern laptops come with wireless Wi-Fi connections that you can use for gaming. But if you’re serious about gaming speed and minimizing latency, interference, and increased speed then the ethernet port will be a priority.

Wired ethernet connections offer more stability compared to wi-fi connections. If the laptop doesn’t have an ethernet port, then you can use the thunderbolt adapter or USB can connect our laptop to a wired network.  Bluetooth connectivity allows you to add wireless keyboards, mice, and speakers to your gaming system.

When it comes to USB ports, the things you need to consider is how many ports you need, versions and speed. The versions you are likely to find are USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. The latter is generally faster than the USB 20 version. Many laptops now feature a USB Type-C port that supports even speedier transfers.

An HDMI port or mini DisplayPort allows you to connect to an external monitor which can be perfect if you want to view your game on a larger screen.

7. Battery Life

Generally, the battery life on gaming laptops is poor, and for good reason too. They contain high-performance, power-hungry parts including the GPU and high-speed fans that drain the battery fast. Plus, certain games rely heavily on GPU power which further eats into your battery’s life.

Manufacturers are continuously trying to improve the battery life on their laptops, which we appreciate but on average you should expect 2 to 4 hours. We don’t recommend playing games without hooking the laptop to a power source as it will shorten the battery’s lifespan.

Must-have features in the best gaming laptop under 2000 dollars

For the most part, when we’re hunting for a gaming laptop in this price range, we’re only thinking about its gaming abilities. And we want to be sure that we can play the latest gaming titles with it.

Yet, in the real sense, you can do so much more. This laptop can be used for other applications including power-hungry video and audio editing programs. So, if you’ve got to work and play, you have a deal right here.

Back to our main area of focus, what can you expect from the best gaming laptop under $2000?

1. AAA Gaming Support

Some gamers believe you can play high-end games with 9th or 10th generation Intel Core i5 processors. They may have a point since minimum system requirements for some games like PUBG require a Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM and a video card.

For good results, we recommend that you don’t go below 8th generation i5 processors. Where possible go for Intel Core i7 processors and above or their AMD Ryzen equivalents like the Ryzen 7 4800HS to ensure that you can play AAA games comfortably.

2. Sufficient RAM and Storage

Another must-have is ample RAM. Many laptops in this price range come with 16GB of RAM, which is enough for smooth gaming. If you can get more RAM go for it, it may feel like overkill, but you’ll be future-proofing. Just don’t go for less otherwise your games will la and stutter badly.

Modern laptops come with SSD storage rather than HDD for plenty of reasons including read/write speed, longevity, and minimized heat generation. How much storage space can you expect from the SSD? Around 512GB is a good place to start.

Some laptops give you the best of both worlds by incorporating both SSD and HDD storage. This way you get the high speed of an SSD for gaming and the huge storage capacity found in HDDs for your other data like media files and videos.

3. Heat Dissipation

Considerable heat is produced during gameplay and as the laptop heats up, your frame rates start to drop affecting your speed and over time, will wear out the machine’s internal components.

Thankfully, modern laptops feature cooling mechanisms such as aero blade fans and anti-dust tunnels to help dissipate heat effectively. Do you want to avoid speed throttle? Check the cooling mechanism.

4. Discrete Graphics

Yes, it’s true Core i5 and i7 processors can render decent graphics but they’ll so at much slower rates than discrete or dedicated graphics. The last word you want to hear while playing a high-end is “slow.”

Further, AAA games demand high levels of details, rich colors, contrasts, and special effects, which can’t be achieved by integrated graphics. If you want to enjoy the game fully, ensure your laptop comes with a dedicated graphics chip. At this price range, you can expect an NVIDIA GTX card which does a good job at rendering gaming content.

5. Visuals

Here, look for a full HD screen with 1920 x1080 resolution being the absolute minimum. Monitors that have anti-glare panels minimize eye strain that can result from gaming for long hours.

Full HD screens that support In-Plane Switching (IPS) are preferable since they allow you to view the screen from different angles without experiencing image distortions. This is especially important when there are multiple players involved or if you have an audience watching you game.
