The Microsoft Surface Laptop is a common option amongst mid-range budget laptops like this. Powered by a software and computer mastermind Microsoft, the surface laptop is built with premium specs and configuration in an attractive and lightweight package.

In its Internals, the Surface Laptop is configured for daily home and office use. You get two processor choices, the mid-range Intel Core i5-7200U, and higher-end Intel Core i7-7660U. Both choices come from the recent 7th Gen Intel Core family.

There is a higher base processor speed with the i7-7660U coupled with the Intel Iris Plus 640 graphics which is the most significant advantage over the usual Intel HD 620 of the i5-7200U.

The performance for the Core i5 and i7 chips can be suitable for several hardware-intensive activities such as multimedia creation and editing.

Another prominent feature in the Microsoft Surface Laptop that impressed us is its 13.5 inches screen offering an extraordinary 2256 x 1504-pixel count. This gives you a sharper and clearer picture quality than that by the FHD 1920 x 1080-pixel screens.

The display is also top-notch with an aspect ratio of 3:2 in contrast with the common 16:9. The 3:2 panels function better for photo and video editing while the 16:9 aspect ratio works well for watching movies.

Likewise, the screen supports active digitizer pen input asides from the usual finger input. You can make use of the Microsoft’s Surface Pen on it, although the Pen does not come with the laptop and you’ll have to purchase it separately.

Beneath the screen, you’ll find Microsoft’s sophisticated Alcantara fabric-covered keyboard deck. This is the kind of fabric coating being used in designing car interiors. It stands out when compared to other plastic and aluminum covered notebook keyboard decks.  According to Microsoft, the finish also helps to resist stains and spills.

The Surface Laptop comes with limited connectivity for a Windows-built system. It features just a single USB port, a combo mic/headphone port, and a Mini DisplayPort, a proprietary Surface Connect jack by Microsoft for charging and docking. It does not come with an SD memory card reader.

As Microsoft stated that on a single battery charge, the laptop can last up to 14.5 hours of video playback. However, in an online review we conducted, it has a battery life of around 9 to 10 hours in a frequent home or office use with a reduced brightness which is still impressive.

Pros
  • High-resolution touch screen
  • Great 3:2 aspect ratio
  • Stylish design
  • Long battery Life
Cons
  • Limited ports and connectivity
  • Below-quality Windows 10 S
Specs Recap
  • Editors Score: 8.5/10
  • Processor: 2.4 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR
  • Storage : 256 GB SSD
  • Display (2256 x 1504)
  • Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640
  • Screen Size: 13.5 inches
  • Weight: 5 pounds
  • Battery Life: 14.5 hours

Bottom Line

The Surface Laptop is an improvement to the Surface Pro and Surface Book Laptops by Microsoft. It is a sought-after laptop that checks off several features and specifications that are quite impressive. However, there were some compromises made such as limited connectivity and slower SSD but that shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for most.

The E15 E5-576G-81GD is one of the newest laptops from the top-notch Aspire series released by Acer. It is designed to suit the needs of every business person and everyone in search of up-to-date hardware at a decent price.

The design of the Acer Aspire E15 laptop is somewhat traditional and looks like a business laptop. It has a sturdy chassis without the exterior part having a good feeling and looking nice to touch. It comes with a separate lid that ensures quick and easy access to the RAM and hard drive slots.

The keyboard is quite satisfying to use especially if you use it to type and write a lot of content. The touchpad is also impressive as it gives a quick and smooth response to commands by your finger.

One of the most interesting hardware components of this laptop is the CPU. It features the modern Intel Core i7-8550U. It forms part of the striking 8th generation of Intel Chips and makes use of the Kaby Lake R micro-architecture. It has a 1.8 GHz clock frequency with a turbo boost of up to 4.0 GHz. This is an indication of how versatile Intel Chips are.

Similar to the CPU, the graphics processor that comes with this laptop offers several interesting technicalities. It specifically makes use of the Nvidia MX150 dedicated video graphics card which is part of the GeForce series. Making use of a dedicated graphics card gives you an advantage over an integrated graphics card.

Acer had to make some compromises to ensure this laptop comes at an incredibly low price. Despite its full HD display, the panels are noticeably dim when compared to other mid-range laptops. It has an average brightness of 180 nits which is a bit lower than the 250 nits recommended by experts. This low level of brightness implies potential issues using the laptop outdoors under intense sunlight.

The storage capacity is another impressive feature in this laptop. In what is prominent amongst high-end laptops, solid-state drives are constantly gaining popularity. This particular version features 256 GB SSD which gives efficient operation and fast boot-up times.

Prolonged battery life is one of the important features found in productivity laptops such as this. Consequently, the Acer Aspire doesn’t fail for this purpose. On a full charge, you can get almost 15 hours of usage on light web surfing with reduced brightness.

Pros
  • Good battery life
  • Ability to upgrade
  • A decent number of ports
  • Impressive graphics card
Cons
  • Subpar screen brightness
  • It gets hot
Specs Recap
  • Editors Score: 9/10
  • Processor: 1.8 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR3
  • Storage: 256 GB SSD
  • Display: (1920 x 1080)
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce MX150
  • Screen Size: 15.6 inches
  • Weight: 5.27 pounds
  • Battery Life: 15 hours

Bottom Line

The Acer Aspire received quite a several positive reviews by users for its advanced Intel Core i7-8550U, 8GB of RAM, fast Solid-state drive, and solid and elegant build quality. You also have an option to upgrade with its M.2 SSD. On the other hand, there were criticisms by users for its poor screen quality and constant heating.

The Asus VivoBook S15 is a budget-friendly best laptop under $800 that packs a massive 15.6-inch screen in light and ultraportable body. It also comes with other compelling features such as a colorful and bright FHD display, narrow bezels, stylish aluminum lid and dual drives for storage.

The Asus VivoBook has an all-metal look. However, the reality is that there is only a little portion of metallic elegance on the lid. An enormous part of the chassis comes in plastic and it is painted to give it a metallic look.

Even though it is a 15-inch laptop, the Asus VivoBook follows the conventional Ultrabook style. It has a wedge design that tapers to its slim-est point allowing you to rest your wrists. You get an incredibly light laptop with a weight of just over 3 pounds with its plastic build and sleek body

The 1920 x 1080 full HD matte display of the VivoBook gives sharp and crisp images and colors with hyper-reality. You get reasonable contrast and color for office work and entertainment. The matte finish improves reflection but you won’t be able to make use of it comfortably outdoors.

One regularity that comes with ASUS laptops is its great keyboard, and that is what is found here. It features a key travel distance of 1.6mm which I consider to be about perfect for this kind of laptop. Also, the keyboard full-sized layout gives you sufficient typing space.

Examining the touchpad, it is important to note its high precision and responsiveness. The finish on the touchpad is also perfect which allows for smooth performance with little or no resistance even with sticky fingers.

Inside the S15, you’ll find a powerful Core i5-7200 processor, 8 GB of RAM and a pair of drives for storage including 128 GB solid-state drive and 1 TB HDD. This makes the laptop more than efficient enough to handle any task you throw at it.

The processor also comes with Intel HD 620 graphics and a dedicated 2GB Nvidia GeForce 940MX Graphical processing unit. Although this is not a gaming laptop, it is a feature what assessing.

The SonicMaster audio system that comes with the Asus Laptop gives accurate and rich music. However, it is not that loud to permeate a small room. It has an AudioWizard software that allows you to choose a range of audio profiles for music, movies, and games.

Pros
  • Lightweight with a nice screen size
  • Good battery Life
  • Sufficient quantity of ports
  • Fast booting time
Cons
  • Low sound quality
  • Plastic material feels cheap
Specs Recap
  • Editors Score: 8.5/10

  • Display: (1920 x 1080)
  • Graphics: Intel Integrated Graphics
  • Screen Size 15.6 Inches
  • Weight: 3.7 pounds
  • Battery Life: 12 hours

Bottom Line

The features found in the Asus VivoBook S15 is something that should please many. With a price as this, it has an interesting piece of hardware that ensures good performance. If you are in search of dedicated graphics to upgrade your content creation, you can make use of this laptop.

  • 13.3" Full HD (1920x1080) IPS Infinity...
  • 256GB Solid State Drive
  • 8GB RAM / Backlit Keyboard
  • Windows 10 / Wifi AC / Bluetooth

The Lenovo IdeaPad 710S is an appropriate definition of mobile multimedia getting into the category ultralight notebooks. It is very compact with a stylish and versatile design. While most laptops in this category are used basically as an office tool, this multi-media proficient system also can run less power-intensive games with its fierce internals

The Lenovo IdeaPad 710S comes in a sturdy chassis made of metal and a magnesium top and aluminum body that allows you to easily carry it around. The Lenovo logo can be seen in the upper left corner of the fairly plain top when you close it.

Once you open the 710S, you’ll discover the 13.3 inches screen with the camera and dual microphones placed along the top. The 1920 x 1080 IPS screen is undoubtedly good for most users and it is quite responsive in terms of pushing the graphics owing to the latest Intel Iris 540 GPU.

The type of keyboard that comes with IdeaPad is AccuType with a full size 6 and has a full row of function buttons across the top. Typical to the recurring styles these days, the keyboard has its function keys linked to the computer control keys.

According to reviews by users, the touchpad with its glass surface has a smooth touch and very responsive similar to the left and right buttons present beneath the same glass surface

Bearing in mind that users will most likely use an ultrabook like the Lenovo IdeaPad for office or business-related activities, the Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM can efficiently handle such tasks. Users admitted that Microsoft Office, Photoshop and other software opened quickly and had a fast operation.

The selection of ports is not one of the strong aspects of the Lenovo IdeaPad. Apart from a USB-A 3.0 port and other standard ports found on most laptops, it does not come with a USB-C port. Also, there are high chances you’ll have to get a micro HDMI to HDMI adapter to make use of the HDMI port.

For a compact and light system, the sound that comes out of JBL stereo speakers is quite impressive. You also can switch between movies, music, games, voice or custom modes. At full volume, it is quite loud and you’ll observe the surround effect when watching movies.

Pros
  • Light and solid build
  • Crisp display
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • No USB Type-C port
  • Small arrow key
Specs Recap
  • Editors Score: 8/10
  • Processor: 2.7 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR4
  • Storage: 512 GB SSD
  • Display: (1920 x 1080)
  • Graphics: Intel UHD graphics 620
  • Screen Size 13.3 inches
  • Weight: 2.79 pounds
  • Battery Life: 9 hours

Bottom Line

If you are in search of a lightweight laptop, decent battery life, great performance for business and school activities, then you should consider getting the Lenovo IdeaPad 710S. Although you might be let down by the substandard choice of ports and the fan getting a little noisy sometimes.

The Inspiron 15 7567 is Dell’s latest effort to take charge in the highly competitive gaming laptop market. It is an entry-level gaming notebook that can play modern titles in full HD display. It also boasts well-built graphics performance, larger memory, and decent storage.

Despite the Inspiron 15 7567 is a mid-range gaming notebook, you’ll find it hard not to be impressed by the amount of power it packs under the hood. With a Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ, 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti, you get all you need to take care of all your gaming requirements.

However, you should be aware that you wouldn’t be able to play all the latest games at ultra-settings. Nevertheless, you will still enjoy a great gaming experience.

The current trend in the laptop industry is an ultra-thin bezel design but the Dell Inspiron features a rather thick bezel. The top bezel houses the webcam while the bottom features the Dell Logo.

In spite of the bezels being thick, this laptop comes with a 15.6-inch FHD display with 1920 x 1080p resolution. It has a wider angle of view and better color performance in comparison with an ordinary TN screen.

The Dell Inspiron 15 7567 features a top-notch appearance with a matured and smooth black color. Its entire body is made of metal with the side fuselage of the laptop made from plastic material to prevent the laptop from appearing cheap.

The design of the Inspiron 15 keyboard feels soft and comfortable. The keys come with a red lining with all the inscriptions written in red. This makes the keyboard look special and different from the conventional white and black keyboards present in most mid-range laptops.

For storage, the Inspiron 15 packs 256GB M.2 SSD which delivers adequate read and write speeds. Also, you get 1 TB hard drive working at 5400 rpm and can handle the task of a secondary drive efficiently and also large enough to store a large number of files.

You’ll find the speakers at the back and bottom of the laptop. They tend to get very loud because they are built with a subwoofer and this is quite remarkable. According to experts, it was revealed that at maximum volume, the sound cranks up. Hence, you shouldn’t increase the volume to the maximum.

Pros
  • Great build quality
  • Superb audio output
  • Impressive performance
Cons
  • Touchpad feels loose
  • The screen is not too bright
Specs Recap
  • Editors Score: 8.5/10
  • Processor: 2.5 GHz

  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti0
  • Screen Size: 13.3 inches
  • Weight: 2.71 pounds
  • Battery Life: 8 hours

Bottom Line

The Dell Inspiron stands as one of the best entry-level gaming laptops. It offers an excellent balance between style and performance. Also, its large screen, good audio quality, and great sub-woofer make it excel. The only major disappointing feature with this rather impressive system is its loose touchpad.

It offers a unique approach to those are getting bored with the staples that have dominated the laptop industry for years. It packs a solid AMD processor, touch-screen display, good battery life, and comfortable keyboard, all in a stylish aluminum body.

The exterior part of the MateBook D 14 features a solid metal chassis that resembles several aluminum-built laptops. But Huawei does not portray the MateBook D 14 as aluminum, they just declare the features as a metallic body-colored with Mystic Silver.

The keyboard is nice and quite spacious. While you don’t get the Home and End keys, it comes with a roomy trackpad which allows you to work on comprehensive reports, reviews and documents with no stress.

Users generally also like the typing feel they get here, except the keycaps made of plastic which feels quite cheap and shaky.

Also, another interesting feature of the Huawei MateBook D 14 can be seen on its sides. It comes with a USB Type-C and HDMI port, 3.5 mm headphone jack on the left, and two USB-A ports on the right. The USB-C port supports the delivery of power and that’s a plus.

The screen on MateBook d 14 covers a considerable part of the sRGB gamut which implies it is great for simple photo work. The screen also comes in FHD resolution with an added feature which is the HDR enabling display of higher contrast colors ensuring a better visual experience.

The brain of the laptop is the AMD Ryzen 5 2500U processor which is a quad-core, 8-threaded processor with a base speed of 2 GHz and a turbo boost of up to 3.6GHz. It comes with an AMD Vega 8 IGP which is included on-processor graphics engine built with the Vega architecture.

Besides the CPU and GPU, the MateBook D also features 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 256GB SSD. These are specs only commonly found in flagship and expensive notebooks and they will make simple work of anything you throw at it from watching videos, browsing, several spreadsheets or powerpoint tabs.

  • Display: (1920 x 1080)
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon Vega 8
  • Screen Size: 14inches
  • Weight: 3.46 pounds
  • Battery Life: 8.5 hours

Bottom Line

It is rare for laptop manufacturers to deliver solid performance with AMD processors due to its complexities but that is not the case with the Huawei Kepler MateBook D 14. It shows a good implementation of AMD technology. Not to also mention that it comes with a great keyboard and sound quality. However, it has a dim display and deprivation of an upgrade.

Many of the big 17.3-inch laptops available in the laptop market are built for the high-end gamer and comes with extraordinary specs but also with a high price tag. This is not the case with the HP Pavilion 17, which might be a basic mid-range laptop but still comes with mouth-watering features.

The notebook comes in a slightly different design from its predecessor. However, it still retains the typical look of a Pavilion. It is well built and solid with our only issue being a little weighty. It has a plastic body integrated with 3D metal which gives it a more premium feel.

Also, there is an inclusion of the Left Hinge which you’ll find impressive. It is positioned over the rear of the latest Pavilion clamshells. When you open the screen, the extension at the rear supports the entire system slightly slanted to give you a more satisfying typing experience.

Upgradable components have been one of the Pavilion’s main selling points and you get to choose from the latest selection of components. The Pavilion 17 comes with a Kaby Lake Intel Core i5 -85250U processor and 8GB of RAM which ensures efficient performance and fast load times for an amazing PC experience.

Also, its Intel HD graphics 620 is an on-processor graphics that features shared video memory that offers everyday image quality for use on the internet, simple photo and video editing and other multimedia tasks.

Screen option on the HP Pavilion is quite substandard for a 17.3-inch laptop. Not having a Full HD screen on this laptop is a cause for concern because it is usually a standard spec on even more affordable Chromebooks.

You get next-generation wireless connectivity with the HP Pavilion 17. You can connect to your networks and hotspots via all WiFi standards. Also, it comes with good ports selection at the left and right that ensures a seamless connection.

Just on top of the display, you’ll find a Wide Vision camera HP features in this laptop. They are new lenses to capture a wider view than normal. Also, there are optional IR cameras that grants you the opportunity to login with your face via Windows Hello.

Pros
  • Thinner body with slim bezels
  • Integrates modern components
  • Good quality webcam
Cons
  • No Full HD screens
Specs Recap
  • Editors Score: 8/10
  • Processor: 1.6 GHz
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR4
  • Storage: 2 TB
  • Display: (1600 x 900)
  • Graphics: Intel UHD graphics 620
  • Screen Size: 17.3inches
  • Weight: 6.61 pounds
  • Battery Life: 10 hours

Bottom Line

The HP Pavilion 17 seems to be the best restatement of entry-level laptops by HP. It continues a long-standing practice of being upgradable and affordable. It comes in a slimmer bezel and thinner chassis at it appears to be nicely equipped with several amazing features.

Then again, with several Chromebooks giving a Full HD display at half the price, the performance and layout of this machine could be debatable.

You just need to rotate the 360-degree hinge and it converts from a laptop to a tablet mode.

The Acer Spin 3 comes with a 14-inch Full HD IPS multi-touch convertible display with 0.38 inches thin bezels. This display gives a screen to body ratio of 78.9 % and extra screen real-estate. This gives large angles of view in the vertical and horizontal direction.

You get 16GB of DDR4 RAM which is more than enough memory for you to perform various tasks at the same time. This will enable you to have various browser and programs running at the same time without any lag or hitch.

Also, with 512GB PCle NVMe SSD, you’ll have ample storage and speed in opening files and turning the system on and off.

It uses a Windows 10 Home operating system that is widely recognized by many especially in terms of its user-friendly features and general smooth performance. You can compare it to a powerful Windows machine considering appearance and functionality.

The Acer Spin 3 uses the latest Whiskey Lake i7-8565U, an ultra-low voltage 8th Gen processor used for power systems and convertibles. It has a remarkable benchmark score of 9002. With a base speed of 1.8GHz and a turbo boost of up to 4.6GHz, it provides up to 11% more power than the i7-8550U processor.

It does not come with a dedicated graphics card but an Intel UHD graphics 620 that comes between NVIDIA 910M and 920M. It can handle anything apart from the latest games at high settings and complex multimedia editing. You can use it for photoshop and lightroom with no hassles.

The chiclet backlit keyboard has a good feel with the fingerprint sensor working quite well. It features a decent and responsive trackpad but you can also connect a mouse if you are used to it.

You don’t get many ports on the Acer Spin 3 laptop and it does not come with a USB-C port you can use to connect to other ports, docks, and devices.

Pros
  • Good performance for multitasking
  • Touchscreen works well
  • Durable build quality
  • Great fingerprint scanner
Cons
  • Noisy fan operation
  • Limited connectivity
Specs Recap

  • Graphics: Intel UHD graphics 620
  • Screen Size: 14.0 inches
  • Weight: 3.75 pounds
  • Battery Life: 10 hours

Bottom Line

The Acer 3 14-inch is a power 2-in1 convertible laptop to enable you to work on the move. It features an awesome touch screen display, a useful stylus, decent speakers and a generally compact design. However, limited connectivity and issues with the battery life are downsides we can’t ignore.

ZenBooks from ASUS is widely renowned for its powerful hardware performance packaged in an elegant and compact chassis. The ZenBook UX461 stands as a notable member of this lineup. It features specs suitable not just for business use alone but also for multimedia works and even for light gaming. It also adds some features not typical of the series.

When it comes to looks and design, the ZenBook Flip 14 does not disappoint. It has a durable all-aluminum construction with no irregularities. Just as the lid comes resistant to torsion and bending. Even the flex for the interior is not easily noticed and quite negligible considering the size of the system.

Despite the chassis being compact, it has a foldable façade that covers an accurate mobile series of Intel Core i7-8550U CPU. It receives thermal ability from a single, edge-mounted vent found at the left of the keyboard.

The fast-performing CPU is followed by 8GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD which is a powerful configuration for a 14-inch laptop that almost looks like a tablet-sized system.

While the CPU of the ZenBook UX461 might be quite impressive, the GPU is just commonplace. This is because a growing number of ultrabooks are beginning to feature dedicated GPUs. There is just an Intel UHD Graphics 620 which is not on par with an entry-level dedicated GPUs.

The design of the hinge is carried out with some intelligent engineering. It folds to allow the face of the keyboard to have an incline to ensure comfortable typing sessions without thickening the design of the entire body.

While it does not come with a built-in Ethernet port, you’ll find just every other interface you need here such as one Type-C and two Type-A USB 3.1 port, a MicroSD slot, an HDMI port, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

The 14-inch touchscreen 1920 x 1080 display of the ZenBook looks just as sharp and vivid as you’d expect. It measures an above-average of 280 nits of brightness more than the recommended 250 nits by experts. The display of the Flip 14 is reasonably bright and dims only slightly when you view from the sides.

Pros
  • Solid viewing-angles
  • Sturdy chassis and sleek design
  • Good hardware performance
  • Great keyboard
Cons
